RUGBY UNION’S FUNCTION;

PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES.

The annual dance and euchre tournament promoted by the Paeroa Rugby Union was held at the Gaiety Theatre last night. The popularity of the function was evidenced by .the large and representative gathering of people who attended;.

The dance hall was prettily decorated for the occasion, and the floor being in splendid condition, ,a large crowd enjoyed dancing to the music contributed by Pickford’s orchestra. Messrs L. C. Masters and M. Poland ably carried out the duties o*£ M. s.C.» and extra music was supplied by Misses L. Vincent and F. Halligan. A time was spent by Messrs T. M. Wilkinson and Ja,ck Rackham, who controlled the euchre tournament in the Soldiers’ Club. Some- 70 players took part in the competition, which was played with zest and enthusiasm. After supper had been partaken of the chairman of the union (Mr W. P. Pennell) called upon the president th present the trophies won during the season. PRESIDENT’S REMARKS. The president (Mr W. Marshall) in liis opening remarks apologised for the unavoidable .absence" of Mn J. W. Silcock, president of the Thames Valley Rugby Union, and Mr J. M. Crosby, secretary. Mr Marshall said that the 1926 season for the greatest of outdoor games had drawn to a close, and it was, fitting that such a successful season should conclude with ,a well-supported social and On behalf of the union it was his privilege to .thank all who had supported Rugby during the season, and also those who had contributed prizes and trophies and assisted with the 'function that night. Football played a large part in the life of the community, and it was only by ready support and co-operation that the town and district could keep to the forefront in Rugby matters and the players be encouraged to play up and play the game. MR R. B. PENLINGTON HONOURED.

The president said his first pleasant duty to perform that night was to call upon Mr R. B. Penlington to accept a handsome salad bowl servers 'from the Paeroa Rugby Union and affiliated clubs. It was fitting that Mr Penlington should receive some public recognition of the valuable services he had given to Rugby matteis white secretary of the union for over two years, and also as an active referee for nearly five yea,rs. Only those who had beeyi actively associated with football affairs knew the value of the work performed cheerfully by Mr Penlington in furthering and fostering football. With the small token went the best thanks of the footballers of Paeroa and district. In conclusion Mr Marshall wished Mr and Mrs Penlington good health, good luck, and every happiness.

The recipient met with prolonged applause as he went forward to receive the gift.

PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. Mr Marshall then proceeded to present the football trophies won during the season as follows : — Senior Competition : The McCullay Shield, won by the West Club for the first time, received by W. Taylor, captain.

Banner Competition: Also won by the West Club, for the second time in succession. The handsome black and gold banner, which was handed to W. Taylor, captain, now becomes the property of the club. The Junior Cup, which has. been played for for many years, and was held by the East Club from 1913 to 1924, was won for the first time, by the Karangahake Club. In handing the cup to the Karangahake captain, Jim Rackham, the president congratulated the team on playing through the season without sustaining a defeat. The Third-grade Cup was won by the Paeroa School team, P.' Poland, captain, for the second time in succession.

The following medals were also presented

West Club : Mr R. W. Evans’ medal for the best back in the senior) team, wdn by J. Verran ; Mr R. W. Evans’ meda.l for the most improved back in the junior grade, won by J. Conolly.

East Club : Mr J. Bren ante medal for the best ail-round player in the senioi’ team, won by C. TreanOr; Mr W. M. Sorensen’s medal for the best all-round player in .the junior team, won by Norman Neil. SHAREBROKERS’ CUP.

The president stated that he had been asked to present the Sharebrokers’ Cup on bejialf off the president of the Thames Valtey Union. This trophy was competed for annually by junior teams playing for. unions under the jurisdiction of the Thames Valley Rugby Union. The cup was won this year by the Paeroa representative team for the first time. In handing the trophy to the captain of the team, Jim Rackham, the president extended hearty congratulations and best wishes for future success. EUCHRE TOURNAMENT.

Prizes won by players in the euchre tournament that night were then distributed as follows :— Ladies : Mrs A. O’Neill, first; Mrs H. Poland, second. Men: Mr. A. uNeill, flilpt; Mr W. R. Wilson, second.
