ATHLETIC CLUB.
MEETING OF BA ERDA BODY.
SPORTS MEETING DECIDED ON.
The first annual meeting of the Paeroa Athletic Club was held on Weds neisiday night, the president (MH W. Marshall 1 ), presiding over the following: Dr. G. T. Smith, Messrs: T. M. Wilkinson, G. H. Taylor, A. Bridge, T. 11. Hale, R. G. Sbuthby, D. C. Snow, J. Walmsley, and K. L. Slyfield (secretary and treasurer). The balance-sheet disclosed receipts totalling £43 4s 2d, while the expenditure amounted to £9 2s 3d, leaving a credit balance of £34 Is lid. The report dealt with the work done during the past year in preparing for the inaugural sports meeting, and stated that the membership stood at 38.
The committee recorded thanks to Ml< A. M. Samuel, M.P., for the offer, of a cup for competition; to Mn W. Bain for the use of his room for committee meetings ,the Press for reports, the ladies’ who willingly came forward' with assistance. on several occasions, and the artists whp assisted in the club’s concert.
In moving the .adoption off the report the president said that he considered the club had- covered good groundwork and had built upon a solid foundation, and great credit wa's 1 due to the management committee. He, hoped the club wouM continue to grow and prosper. In regretting the small attendance a,t the meeting he said that so important a meeting was deserving of having the hall packed with friends and supporters. Athletics tended to bring out the finest characteristics of the race, and no better work could, have been undertaken. tha.n the fostering of athletics. The encouragement of athletics was a splendid work, and the enthusiastic few in Paeroa were deserving not only of congratulations, but of the respect and hearty support of all classes of the community.
Several other speakers followed and supported the remarks made by the president.
In moving that the club record its appreciation and. thanks: to Mr Slyfield for tlhe valuabe work he had performed since the inception of the club Mr T. M. Wilkinson said that the success and financial position as disclosed that night were, due to til© work and enthusiasm of Mr Slyfield, who: had given of his best in the position of secretary. The whole-hearted manner! in which he had worked fofir the club and in the interests of athletics had been an inspiration to the club, the members of which were very grateful. In seconding the proposition Mr G. H. Taylor added his quota of praise, and said that “Ken.” was one of the best secretaries with whom it had been his pleasure to be associated, and the club was very fortunate in haivng a man of his ability and thoroughness to handle its affairs. ,The resolution was carried with acclamation. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers 'for the 1926'27 season resulted as follows :— Patron, Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P.; president, Mr W. Marshall; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. G. H. Taylor, R. Wad-' dingham, J. Walmsley, B. Steward, C. P. Topliss ; hon. surgeons, Drs. G. T. Smith and W. W. Littlte; hefa. auditor, Mn W. L. Lawrence; management committee, Messrs R. G. Southby, J. M. Fox, A. Bridge, T. H. Hale, C. D. Snow, J. Rackham, T. M. Wilkinson, J. W. Silcock, W. Moore, E. G. Preston. SPORTS MEETING. eSveral members spoke of the desirability of holding a sports meeting at Paeroa. After a lengthy discussion it was resoljved that a meeting be held! at the local domain on Saturday, December 11 next, the programme and details to be, left in the hands of the committee, with power to act. CLUB RULES. A set of draft rutes was submitted, and after consideration these, rules were adopted on the motion of the president, seconded by Mr Taylor. A hearty vote of thianks to Mr Wilkinson fdr acting as chairman of the committee, a ; nd also to Mr Marshall for presiding at the meeting, concluded the business.
