PUHANGA CANAL.
ALTERNATIVE TO BRIDGE.
STATE FAVOURS METALLED ROAD
Some time ago representations were made to the Minister of Lands by the Kaihere and Patetonga settlers with, the. object of obtaining the erection of a bridge Across the Piako River at Kaihere Landing, or alternatively, the installation of a 'ferry service. The Public Works Department’s resident engineer at Paeroa has now advised the Hauraki Plains County Council that both his department and the La,nds Department favour the provision of metalled access to Ngatea along the left bank of the river and the Pulianga canal in. lieu of th© bridge proposal. The Minister of Lands also concurred in this. On 'the 1926-27 estimates provision for this' metalling appeared under the item '“NgateaKaihere, £lOO on account of X5OOO, £ for £.” The letter stated that it would, therefore, now be for the. council to decide whether or not this road when considered as; an outlet for the Kaihere and Patetpnga settlers, was of sufficient importance to warrant a claim on the allocation for this financial year. When, the 'matter came before the council 011 Thursday the chairman said that a £ for £ subsidy Was also forthcoming from the Lands Department. He moved that the council a;gre,e with the opinion of the -Ministers uf Lands and Public Works, but it considered that the bridge over the Piaka River would also be necessary in th'e future.
