WORKS IN THE COUNTY.

PROGRESS IN OHINEiiURI. REPORT OF ENGINEER. The following report for the month of September was submitted by the Ohinemuri county engineer (Mr E. Shaw) .at Thursday’s meeting of the council: —

“Authority came to hand for Whangamata Road ; also authority to proceed with the work of ifiainteiiancCi for the current year on the main highways. Proposals were s.ent forward for metalling portion of Cadman Road.

"A start was made to survey the proposed deviation of Whangamata Road at Otto BjCrring’s. Judging by what field work has been done, I; think it will be possible to get the minimum grade of 1 in 15 required by the Public Works Department, but owing to the unsuitable weather the work was suspended until better conditions, prevail.

“Paeroa Water Supply.—The reservoir has had a thorough cleaning out, setae hundreds of yards of material bQing removed. The intake was opened up and new filter baskets installed; also two sets of groynes made of cyclone netting and filled with mteal were placed up-s.tream, so as to catch the gravel which comes, down during flood time and finds its way into the dam, decreasing its holding capacity. “The widening of the road in the Karangahake Gorge at the old dam site is. just pn being completed. The spoil was used in building a rough wall on the outside, which will further widen the road. When completed this will be a decided improvement to what it was previously, and will overcome a dangerous, corner.

“Regarding the balance of metalling at Waitoki, I would recommend that tenders be called, returnable in two weeks, for the supply and delivery of 400 cubic yards of 1% inch metal for the top course of three inches, to be placed on that portion metalled last summer, making in all eight inches of metal, as. required by the Main Highways Board.—Agreed to.

“Paeroa Cemetery.—lit will be necessary to have a survey made of extra plots in portions' of the cemetery, as most of the available sections have been used. —Authorised. “The scarifying and refiling of the Thames road has been in operation during the month, but owing to the weather conditions prevailing it was found necessary to suspend work with the roller until conditions are more favourable.

“Ryall’s Road, Paeroa, was blinded and rolled during the month, the settlers, Messrs Ryall and Lewis, assisting by carting the blinding for same. ‘ The metal authorised for th® Hem-ilton-Paeroa main highway between Waitoki and Te Aroha has been delivered. “It was found necessary to repair portions of the Hikutaia Settlement road with gravel, which was supplied by a settlers at 8s per Cubic yard. “The gravel portion of Mill Road was cutting up, so I had repairs made with gravel from the silting works, and while working oh this road I had Farrelly’s drain attended to. “The reconstruction and repairs with metal has been carried out on the Waihi-Tauranga road between the Waihi Borough and Tauranga County boundary for its full length of 236 miles, and it is now in fair order.

“I wish to bring under your notice the desirability of having something done in regard to the overflow from Waitoki Creek, Mangaiti, when in flood, as it is doing considerable damage to the filling on the road. Some years ago the Public Works Department erected a small stop-bank, but the first flood carried it away. This is a matter that should be again brought under the notice of the department.” It was resolved that the engineer should interview the Public Works Department and request that the work on the Waitoki Stream should be completed.
