POLICE COURT.

TO-DAY’S SITTING. (Before Mr J. W. Poynton, S.M.) A MILITARY DEFAULTER. At the local Police. Court this morning Franz Peter Bajrakat, Paeroa, was charged with failing to notify his change of address, as required under the Defence Act, 1908. Mr EL A. Porritt appeared for defendant 'and pleaded guilty. Lieutenant V. J. Innes, who represented. the Defence Department, said that defendant had registered but had then gone into a non-effective ajrea. Later he had returned and failed to notify the authorities. Mr Porritt siaid that the pffence_ was not intentional. Barakat had 1 been examined and was found to be medically unfit, and because of that he had thought he was absolved from further training.

The Magistrate said he would accept the excuse advanced by Mr Porritt and deal leniently with the defendant.

A conviction was entered, with 1 a fine of £1 and costs ‘amounting to 7s. SEPARATION AND MAINTENANCE. Mrs Hema Wilkinson (Mr R. S. Carden) proceeded against her husband, George Wilkinson (Mr C. N. O’Neill), railway ganger, Paeroa, for maintenance for herself and 16-months-old son, and also an unborn child. Application was also made for separation and guardianship orders. The Magistrate ‘explained' that under the new Act affiliation cases or maintenance matters between husband and wife were, to be th.ken in camera, with the consent ef thU parties concerned. The solicitors agreed and the Court was cleared. After hearing evidence the' Magistrate said that there was nd suggestions of cruelty oh the husband’s part, and the main trouble appeared to have been between the man’s and woman’s parents.

An order for separation was made, and the wife was also granted custody of the child, the husband to be allow-

ed reasonable access to his child. Maintenance was granted at 30S a week from date, and defendant was ordered to pay costs amounting to K2 12s.
