EVILS OF THE DOLE.
SHORTAGE OF DOMESTICS. WAGES WITHOUT WORK. LONDON, September 15. Despite the fa,ct that there is said to be an acute, shortage of domestics throughout England there are no fewer than 349,274 domestics on the dole. This ic among the facts revealed in a blue book issued to-day. There, is also evidence of slackness in seeking work. The rate recived under the dole approximates clokely to the rate of wages previously received. There is a pronounced inclination to hold out for work of a particular variety. A tremendous number of benefit clajnis are made without evidence to support them. Of 603,061 claims submitted 442,0'51 were disallowed. Of these 44,300 had refused work and 14'0,503 were not genuinely seeking work.
The total amount - paid under the dole for the year is nearly £46,000,000.
