BOROUGH WORKS.
PROGRESS DURING MONTH. REPORTS 1 SUBMITTED. The. following reports were submitted to the Paeroa Borough Council meeting on Thursday evening : — FOREMAN’S REPORT. “The work 'for the past) month has been the cleaning of drains, culverts, and footpaths, and general repairs.' “Drains have been cleaned and culverts cleared as, follows : Puke Road from gasworks bridge to Hill Street; both sides of Railway Street; the 6in pipes in Junction Street; and the drain from King Street to the borough yard. The old culvert entrance to Dearie Street has been renewed. Pipes through the Domain have been replaced and an inspection chamber put in at each end, which will save any further trouble. The culvert leading to the riverbank has been replaced with a bridge.
“Footpaths have 'chipped in Puke Road, Junction Street, and Junction Road, and two loads of gravel were placed on the latter. . Rye Lane, Towers’ Street, Miller Avenue, William, Opatito, and Fraser streets, have been patched with metal. “We have made a start with the cle.aning of the outfall drain from Puke Road, and a start has also been made on the footpath in Railway Street.”
WORKS COMMITTEE’S REPORT. “The staff has been engaged during the month almost entirely on maintenance work, and a good deal of cleaning up has been done. “The formation of a footpath in Railway Street has been partly completed, and will be proceeded with as soon as material for same, is available from the old crossing in William Street was. duly conveyed to the District Engineer of Railways and a conference with the assistant engineer followed. An arrangement was entered into to the effect .that the council would do the necessary formation in Railway Street in return For the scoria which has already been spread and which it was desired to remove. The department agreed to supply the metal and sand and allow for 6in of metal, for a width of 20ft where the alignment of the street had been altered and to lower the old crossing as requested. The grades have been arranged by the council and the pegs placed so that the work is now being done, to our satisfaction. The concrete kerb and channel and stormwater drain have been started, and it is hoped that the Work will shortly be completed. “A start has been made with the main outfall drain above Puke Road. The overburden is being ploughed and thrown back with the small graded and as the council has now a fair staff it is proposed to do the work by our own employees, and if necessary engage an extra man.
“The Beautifying Society is engaged in planting trees in Taylor’s Avenue and Moore Road, and the council has assisted to the extent of carting suitable soil for filling in and planting. This should be a great improvement in a few years. "Two additional horses have been purchased, and we think they are suitable, and the cost to the council has been £39. It is proposed to commence formation work in the railway settlement as soon as the weather conditions are favourable.
