OBITUARY.

MB JOHN McCOMBIE. The late Mr McCombie, who died at his home, Remuera, on Friday last, was one of the best-known mining authorities that ever put foot on the soil Of Thames and Ohinemuri. On account of his superior knowledge of all matters concerned with mining, both oh the surface and underground —for he was a thoroughly practical •man —he held many important positions, his last responsibility in Ohinemuri being controller of the Crown Mines at Karangahake. John McCoimbie was- a very popular man, whom every miner took a pride in working for at Thames, Waitekauri, Waihi, Karangahake, and Coromandel. Deceased was 76 years of age, and ha.d be&h associated 50 years with mining in this district. Mr McCombie was also a well-known and capable Journalist, and in the early days of Thames- was principal Ohinemuri correspondent for “The Thames Advertiser,” a daily morning paper which was owned by J. Lyes > and Sons. Mr McCombie wds also chief mining correspondent, for the “Ohinemuri Gazette” when the late Mr Edwin Edwards was its first owtier, and .he also contributed valuable, articles to the “Hayiraki Tirbune,” a second paper published in Paeroa. The death of Mr John McCombie will be a distinct loss to the mining world. Deceased leaves a wife and six children.
