POLAND CUP COMPETITION. WAIHI DEFEATS PAFROA. The Frank Poland Memorial Cup competition was contiued On Saturday afternoon, when Wallii defeated Paeroa by six points to three at tdie local domain. There was only a, moderate attendance of the public, and both teams had plenty of supporters. With t'hei exception of one heavy shower towards the closing stages of the game the Weather was fine, and the field was. in good playing condition. As an exhibition of representative Rugby the game was very disappointing, and there was little between the teams. If anything the visitors- were the heavier, but combination was lacking on both sides. Th e scores that were registered were generally the outeotme of loose play and a large element Of: luck. There were several changes in the per|sd|imel of. both teams at the last moment, qnd that may have accounted tto some extent for the lack of combination and the ragged play. Paeroa actually took the. field with 13 men, but the vacancies were filled shortly after the game commenced. Despite the efforts of the referee the teams were over; 20 minutes late in getting out, and the local players, it is understood, were the cause of the delay. Play was quickly transferred to the other end, where in the tight Catlin cleared by means) of a lucky speculator to near the half-way line. A penalty followed the line-out, but A. Robinson was unsuccessful With the kick. A 'further penalty was gained by the. visitors almost immediately, but the, kick was slhort and Eastwood ciive.d, but was just beaten for the ball by Masters, a force resulting. Killgorir secured from-the kick-out, but was, penalised folr hanging on. A. Robinson’s kick missed. In tight play near the posts Catlin secured and passed to Taylor, who cleared. • "

On resuming after half-time both teams settled down to steadier play. The kick-otit went to Paerba’s twentyfive, where Thorp gained possessionGilpin marked the kick and cleared. Catlin carried play back again to the visitors’ quarter, but Tubman cleared with, 'a long kick. In a flush headed by Taylor the ball was transferred to Masters, to Catlin, to Verra,n, who

sent out near Waihi’s, twenty-five flag. The line-out was .secured by Snow, who passed to Campbell, to Crimmins, who made a good run and scored near the corner. Robinson foiled with the kick. Paeroa 3, Waihi 3. Keeping up the pressure Tubman secured 'from the kick-out and carried up, but the movement was negatived by Thorp intercepting the pass and clearing. With Paero ; a on the attack a five-yards- scrum was ordered, and Waihi saved by forcing. The kickout was- fielded by Snow, who sent out to Gilpin. The. latter made a good run, but offside play by Saunders negatived the movement. The kick was taken by Carrick to McKee to Patterson, who dived, but a knock-on spoiled the movement. The scrum enabled Tubman to clear to the line. In the last quarter Waihi went on the attack. Eastwood secured from the kick-out, and, cutting out six men, made a great run, but his pass was intercepted by, Swann, who relieved the pressure by kicking to the line. Gilpin secured from the line-out but was penalised for hanging on to the ■ball. Catlin’s- kick was returned by Show to Gilpin, and tight play in front of the posts was terminated by Johns diving for the line, but a bre-ach spoiled the effort. A scrum followed, from which Crimmins took a mark, but his kick we.nt wide. In a scramble Saunders crossed the line but lost the ball a.s he fell, a force resulting. The kick-out was followed -up by Taylor, Carrick, and Killgour, but the visitors were equal to the occasion and quickly returned play to near half-way. Masters received from a scrum and sent Catlin and Coldicutt away. The latter made a. good run, tut was forced olut near the corner. In tight play inside the. twenty-five line McKee gained possession and sent out a long pass to Verran which he failed to take and. the ball went out near the corner. Johns secured in tire line-out and passed to Gilpin, who made a strong run before transferring to Malt to score nea,r the corner. Robinson again failed with the kick, and the game ended Waihi 6, Paeroa 3. Mr D. G. McMillan, Plains/, was referee.

THE JUNIORS. Owing to the Waikiho team being unable to keep the arrangement to play Ea ; st, a scratch match was played between the East and West clubs on the No. 2 ground. The game, which was not taken seriously, was won by East by six points to nil. Tries scored for the wnn'ers by Lov.att andH. Moore. Mr T. C. Arnold was referee.
