EDUCATION ACT.
THIS YEAR’S AMENDMENT. BEARING ON SCHOLARSHIPS. The effect of the Education Amendment Act, 1926, so far as the junior and senior national scholarships, ar® concern®d, is that the. children must qualify a year younger than heretofore. This, is a step towards- recognising the importance o® the primary ■ school work, and offers an enepuragei ment for primary school children to ■ qualify for these scholarships. It is possible, of coiurs®, that the country : school children may be at a disadvantage, especially in the case of sole teacher schools.
Under the proposed amendment tne bursaries will be slightly increased' for the purpose o*C enabling sjcholarship holders to meet the , lodging charges. Another important amendment is the alteration of section 134 o® the 1914 Act, whereby the medical inspection of schools is extended to all “registered” schools. This will cover secondary as well as private schools. In clause 6 of the proposed amendment it is arranged that, under section 71 of the principal Act.a.tea,pher who has applied for and subsequently refused a, position shall.not, unless he satisfies the Director of Education that there is, sufficient and proper reason for such refusal, be eligible for appointment to another position as teacher in the service of any board for a period of ■ twelve months from the date of his refusal, or for such shorter period as, the director nfight fix. This is important as affecting the education boards in making appointments. .
