PUBLIC LIBRARY.
PROGRESS OF LOCAL INSTITUTION
GOOD SERVICE MAINTAINED.
The first annual report of the Ohinemuri Public Library since it was municipilised was presented to the Paeroa Borough Coun'cil meeting on Thursday evening. Included in the report was a recommendatibn that the borough shoiuld become members, of. the Libraries’ Association at an annual fee of 10s 6d, nnd that in future the annual returns should be made ®P to March 31 instead ofc December 31. The report further stated that the reading-room was in good oirder, but the, lending library was dingy and not in good repair. It was suggested that provision should be made for some small renovations on the next year’s estimates. The committee was satisfied that the affairs of the. library were property and efficiently managed, and that for a small library and small subscription of 10s per annum good service was given by the library. The loss of the Government subsidy was going to be severely felt-in the finances, and the; question of a greater revenue would have to be considered. SECRETARY’S REPORT. The secretary reported as follows: “During the year the library has steadily maintained its condition of general efficiency. We haye endeavoured to keep pace with the literary appetites of our subscribers by continually adding to our stock of books the very latest and most up-to-date publications. “At the end of the first quarter we lost our librarian, Mrs Halliday, who was leaving the district, but we had the gopd fortune to secure the services of M!iss Kenny, who is a, most efficient librarian. Your committee regrets the los'jFof -three of its 1 members, especially Miss Sha.W, who was one of the earliest and most respected of them. We beg, to place, on record our appreciation of her lopg services. “The thanks of the committee are due to those who have presented newspapers and maga.zines for the reading room ; also, to Mt O’Neill for his- services as auditor.”
The reports were adopted, and it was agreed to carry out some minor repairs forthwith. x
On the motion of Cr. E. Edwards it was decided to record appreciation of the fine services performed on behalf eif the community by the secretary, Mrs A. J. Thorp, over a long period of years.
