PROGRESS IN BOROUGH.
WORKS COMMITTEE'S REPORT.
DRAINAGE AND STREET REPAIRS
The tollowing report was submitted by the Works Committee tb| Thursday night’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council: — “The cleaning of the -main stormwater drain in the domain has been completed, and the wa.ter now has a free pass-age. Unfortunately it appears that a very great length of these pipes are seriously damaged, and the pejrtion that had to be'cleaned was so bad tha,t it was. impossible to save any of the pipes,, and it has been necessary to order 70 additional 21in pipes-. The estimated cost of the whole of the work is £75. Furthei investigations have disclosed the fact that a 12in storm-water dra.in exists fqr four chains from the main transformer tower towards the hospital site. Originally this- discharged into a wooden culvert leading into the river under the present traffic bridge, but it appears that it was blocked during the construction of the approaches to the bridge. Levels are being taken to see if this drain could be utilised to convey the storm-water from upper Normanby Road into the river at this, point. An estimate will then be prepared and a report presented to the council.
“The question of s-torjn-water drainage on Old Te Arblha Road is also receiving attention a,nd it is hoped to report on this matter at the; next meeting.
“Inquiries have been made with the owners of the properties on the corners of Station Road and Belmont Roa,d intersection with a view to rounding off these corners while street improvement work is, proceeding and before the land is built upon. A plan of the proposal is attached, and we recommend that this be authorised providing the cost is reasonable.
“The district telegraph engineer has been interviewed with reference tpi fixing street lamps, to telegraph poles, and, subject to 'consultation before any work is, done, he has agreed to the council’s request provided the lamps are fixed below the department’s wires and that each bracket is- properly earthed. “The Hill Street sewer extension to C, E. Andrews’ property has. been completed on an amended scheme as suggested by the Mayor, and! thei cost wa.s £l5 13s 6d. The lowest tender was £39 10s.
“The removal of the band rotunda cost £5O 16s-, including sbme work which was not in'cluded in the contract, for which tenders were called, the lowest tender being £B's.”
