BIDING SCHEME SUPPORTED.

township turned down.

The Kerepeehi Association met on Wednesday evening to discuss reading matters. Mr Jamieson presided over an attendance of 12 members. Or. Fisher 1 , riding member, was present.

Introducing the matter, Mr Jamieson urged that the ratepayers should be outspoken, s.o that there would not be a depetition of the last' reading proposal fostered by the association .which ,W.as turned down flat by those who had advocated it at meetings. Cn. Fisher said that he had looked into the matter of the rating area, as outlined' by. the Association, and found it faulty, as some farm lands were included which would have to bear 75 per cent, o/’the cost.

The cost of the metalling at £3B per chain was £3515, and against this there was a £-.for £ subsidy and a special subsidy of £7 per chain bf Grown section frontage. The proportion to be borne by the settlefe, including the first year’s, interest and Sinking fund was £l4lO. The valuation of the land in the proposed rating area was £6oo'o, thus the rate would be 4%d in the £• Mr H. H'bff said that the land could not bear a rate of 4%d in the £. He cou'lid not understand the highness, of the, etsimate as the Land Department built roads at £25 per chain. Mr W. Booth advocated: setting up a committee to define a more suitable rating area, and to ascertain the estimated costs from other sources. Mr Jamieson pointed out that the county engineer’s previous estimate was £25 per chain. Cr. Fisher suggested that the Lands Department be asked to do the work. According to the department’s estimate the settlers would only have to find ■ £BOO-odd.

Mr Loving said that the engineer should be asked to justify his figures.. His estimate for the main highway was at the- same rate as the township by-streets. , After much discussion Mr W. Booth moved that a committee of three be stet up to devise a scheme for the township reading. Mr Loving seconded.

Mr Jamieson said that if the township scheme rating area was to be altered it would be useless to discuss tlfe scheme further fOr the rest of the. riding.

Cr. Fisher said that if Kaikahu Road was deleted from the township scheme and included in the riding scheme the township would be rated for, the 'riding scheme. The motion was carried unanimously, and Messrs H. Hoff, W. Shilton, and C. Loving were appbiinted the committee. RIDING SCHEME. Cr. Fisher said that the riding scheme included all the; land in the riding except the township. iWairau Road was estimated to cost £3078, Pekapeka Road £4336, ajid Kaikahu Road £3306. A main highway subsidy had been promised for Wairau RoadThe amount of the loan would be £7600 and the rate. I%'d in the £• There Was the chance of a £ fcfr £ subsidy, on Kaikahu Road, so thei’htes might be less ? Mr- Jamieson .said that the scheme was very favourable and deserved support.

Cfl. Fisher s-aid that he had obtained indications of support from the settlers of Wharepoa and Ngatea rod ; ds. Mr G. Mclntosh moved that Cr. Fisher be as.ked to get the, council

at its meeting on Thursday .to proceed with the necessary steps. . Seconded by Mr C. Peace and carPOSTAL MATTERS. The letter from the PostmasterGeneral, as published in our last issue, was, read. Mr W. Booth said that specific and not general complaints were desired. Specific complaints cp|uld be investigated. OPENING CROWN LANDS.
