An apparatus which prbjmises to minimise, if not eliminate altogether, the danger ' from slips on railway lines, has been invented and patented by Mr P. Webb, the well-known musician, of Christchurch (says the Christchurch Press). A series effi electric wires are so arranged that when a, slip occurs on any part of a railway line alongside which the apparatus has been erected one or mere; of .the wires will break, and by extinguishing a safety signal light will warn the enginedriver of the dangei ahead in ample time to permit the train to be stopped or slowed down to a, safe speed before the danger zone is entered. " A heated axle, bearing, or what is known as a “hot box,” on. the secondclass smoker of the mail train between Hawera and Patea the other morning seriously disturbed the equanimity olf one of the passengers, a young fellow apparently unused to train travelling (s.ays "n exchange). In frantic haste he 'rushed through the first-class smoker, neglecting to shut the doors as; he passed, and. on being reminded of the fact shouted, as, he rushed on his way to the front of the train : “I can't stop. The train is on fire!” From the platform of the ’frotat carriage he made strenuous endeavours to attract the enginedriver’s attention, but, of course, withou avail. At Patea, however, the carriage was rejnoved from the train, and the young man was able to continue his journey in comfokt.
