TWO MEN CONVICTED.

At the Police Court this morning, W. Marshall and G. P. Lamb, J’s.P., Joseph Edward Wade, a railway surfaceman, Paerda, was charged with assaulting George Pennell by striking him with a- clenched fist on July 24. Accused pleaded guilty.

Arthur Edward Birchall, who was. also concerned in the former complaint, was charged with offensive and disorderly behaviour in Belmont Roa.d, Paeroa. He also pleaded guilty, and the two cases were taken together.

Sergeant Mac Lean said that the two men had apparently been drinking. They had picked a quarrel with Pennell and injured him to such an extent that medicaj attention was necessary and a week’s work had been lost. The accused should be made to pay the expenses, and wages. The Bench took a serious view of the offences and entered a conviction against both men. Wade was fined £6 10's (no costs) and Birchajl £5 and costs £1 2s, half the fines to be paid to Pe,nnell.
