CORRESPONDENCE.

SCOUTS QUEEN CARNIVAL.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Referring to the local in your issue of July 30, the writer exhibits a regrettable want o'f knowledge: of the subject. An analysis of the receipts shows that upwards - ofl 75 per cent, of the amount collected was contributed by the outside districts from Waihi to Ngatea, and not by Paeroa; in fact, Paeroa’s contribution to one queen ■amounts to about £4, so it is an exaggeration to. speak olf. the drain on the ctiizejns of Paeroa. Instead of the amount raised exceeding expectations and being more, .than sufficient to meet .the needs, of the purchase of the necessary band instruments, the fact is that the citizens’ committee will not have a, sufficient amount to purchase the necessary instruments, and the acquisition of some of the instruments will have to wait until a later date—until the. Scouts are able to purchase them themselves out of the proceeds, of concerts, etc., with the funds that they will be able to raise with the instruments they can now purchase. As for the coronation ceremony being ■a, free show, that is quite impracticable, and could not be considered. There would be no gain in expending the money the queens and their committee’s have worked spi hard to get in giving it away for no purpose, especially when the fund is not sufficient for the' purpose 'for which it was raised. It was an understood thing that the successful queen should be crowned as, a recognition of her successful work, and th e other queens should receive public recognition; and T feel sure that no one will grudge the few shillings' to see a good entertainment, which is new tbi Paeroa, and for which they will receive an adequate return for, their admission fee. T. DAVIES;
