DRUNK AND DISORDERLY
YOUNG MAN IN TROUBLE.
BENCH GIVES HIM A CHANCE.
A young man, single, named- Alexander Swain, appeared befojre Messrs P. B. Brenan and G, P, Lamb, J’s,P„ at the local Police Court yesterday morning, charged with drunkenness, and 'ajso with being an idle and disorderly person without lawful means of support. Accused pleaded guilty tel both charges, and elected to be summarily' dealt with on the second charge. Constable McClinchy said that when he arrested Slwain in the main street on Monday night he was helplessly drunk and w>a.s behaving lit® a lunatic. It appeared that accused was a labourer, and had travelled from the King Country to Te Kauwhata, and from there to the Plains. He arrived at Paesroa oil Monday, a.nd had been loafing round the hotels all day. When arrested he had the appearance of having fallen into water, as he was wet through. He; was barefooted, and his clothes wl&re dirty and tern. It had been necessary to sup•ply him with clothes, and Mr J. PGamble-, when told of the case, had generously supplied a coat and shirt. Accused had done no work for two and a-half months, and had apparently been “sponging” on the public.
In reply to the Bench Swain said that he was looking for work. It was true tha.t he had been previously convicted for drunkenness, and had not done any work tor some, months.
The Bench stated that it w'as, reluctant to send 'a,censed to gaol for three months, but a Strong, ablebodied man should be able- to earn sufficient to ke,ep himself out of trouble. His habit of wandering aimlessly round the country, causing trouble, would have to cease. On the charge of drunkenness he would be convicted and discharged, and on the charge; of being idle and disorderly he was convicted d,nd ordered to come up tor sentence if called upon within twelve months.
The Bench warned Swain that he had been leniently dealt with, and it was hoped that he would make, an honest endeavour to find emptoyment and behave himself.
