HOCKEY.
WAIHI DEFEATS PAEROA.
LAST SATURDAY’S GAME.
On Saturday the Waihi ladies’ hockey team played ai return match with the Paeroa team a,t the local domain. The game was one of the most interesting seen here this year. Up to half-time there was noi sicore, although many narrow escapes occurred. In the early stages, of the game Paeroa carried into the circle on two occasions, but lost the opportunity. In tight play the loca’Jl team invariably crowded, and were slow in clearing. Frohn near the quarter-way the Waihi backs carried up and Miss M. Carter sent in a stinging shot to! the net, but Miss B. Gibb saved in good style and enabled Miss H. Shand to clear. On resuming after half-time the game was fajrly even, but the hardhitting . tactics of the Waihi backs had the local team at a disadvantage. Within a few minutes of the call of time the visiting forwards carried into the circle and Misis A. O’Neill shot a hard goal, the game ending Waihi 1, Paeroa 0.
Mr C, Stallard was referee. A 1 fine opportunity presents itself for a public-spirited pej-sejn with a knowledge of the game to take the local players' in hand and coach them in the finer points of the game. Unquestionably there is good material available, and the players are enthusiastic, but many lack the knowledge. With sound coaching there is no reason why the team shejuld not become one of the most formidable in the district, but efficient coaching is necessary. .
