.SATURDAY’S TRY-OUT MATCH.

A large gathering of interested spectators from all parts- of the province assembled at the ideal domain on Saturday afternoon, the principal attraction being the senior representative game North (Pia.ko and Hauraki Plains) versus South (Paeroa and Waihi). In view of the fact that the Thames Valle}' touring team was to be selected from the players taking part in the match interest was stimulated. The proceeds will go towards defraying the expenses of the touring team, and the funds will benefit to the extent of about £25. The attendance, especia'ly of the local public, was not as large as was anticipated, but those who did attend were treated to a fair exhibition of Rugby. In the tight the play could have been better,, and combination not what it should have been, especially in the Sbuth team. The north team, with nine players of the Piako union, impressed to a greater degree than the opposing side, and at times worked well together, with the result that the Southerners were defeated by 11 points to 6. The game w'as very fast, and with a few exceptions the play resulted from individual effort, each "man working to catch the selector’s eye and gain a place in the touring team. Following were the teams in the first half:—

Patterson (Paeroa), Peacock (Waihi), W, Taylor (Paeroei,), Keehan (Waihi), Robinson (Paeroa), Crimmins (Waihi). THE GAME. Sbuth kicked off, the ball going out near hallf-way. The line-out was carried up the field by North, but Thorndon marked and cleared. In tight play McLeay gat offside, but Johnson’s shot at goal fell short. S. Goldsbury headed a rush with the ball a.t toe, the movement being stopped by Catlin, who returned with a long kick to North’s twenty-five. In a loose rush McLeay got over the H«ebut was beaten for the ball. The kickout wents to F. Goldsbury, to Nicol, to McQuarters, to Sampson, the latter being pushed out near the corner. The line-out resulted in a force after tight play near the line. From the kick-out Taylor sent out near the half-way flag. Close play followed, until McPherson gained possession and pased to .Sampson, to’Buchanan, the latter being pulled up for a breach. A free kick tor the South, brought relief.

In the second spell the kick-but was taken by McPherson, who put in a streing run before transferring to Burchell, who dived for the line but was unsuccessful. From a line-out near the corner Grice gained possesisioin and scored the first try. Johnson 'failed with the kick. North 3, South 0. The kick-out was sprummed, and after some, tight play SneW forced. North set up a rush and looked like scoring, when offside play by Burchell relieved the position. Taylor took a penalty kick and landed a good goal from near the twenty-five, line. North attacked with the kickout, a,nd Stoupe Iboked dangerous, but Wells intercepted a ; nd cleared'. In an open scramble following the lineout McQuarters dived wer near the corner. Johnson converted. North 8, S'outh*3. From a line-out a fe|w minutes later Snow marked a high ball, but his kick was blocked by Taylor 'for Nichol to. clear. Stoupe gained possession in open play, and passing to F, Goldsbury much ground was gained. Following a loose rush, niside South’s twenty-five the defenders forced. In the loose Tai picked up and sent to Stoupe, to F. Goldsbury, to McQuarters. The latter and Goldsbury made several! passes to each other; McQuarters finally centring for Malt to clear.

On resuming after half-time several changes were made in the personnel of the teams. G. Towers 'replaced Nicol and McLaren took the place of McPherson in the North team, whil® in the South team Catlin tooik Malt's posjtioai as five-eighths; and L. C. Masters replaced Catlin as half-back. Opening the play, Burchell carried up the field, a five-yards scrum resulting, from which W®Hs cleared to halt-way. In loose play Catlin was penalised, but Johnson’s shot failed. Catlin headed a loose rush following the kick-out, but a knock-on spoiled the movement. North retaliated, but S. Goldsbury committed a breach which gave. Taylor an unsuccessful shot at goal. Following an exchange of kicks S. Goldsbury marked in front of the posts, but his kick w'as blocked and Snow cleared. North came again, but a penalty against Towers turned the tables and North had to force.

The last quarter opened with the s<tar bout df the match. Following the kick-oiit Stoupe secured and made a good 'run before transferring to F. Goldsbury, who passed to his brother, the latter diving over near the posts. Johnson failed to convert. Nc|rth 11, South 3. The kick-out was secured by Gilpin, who passed toi Catlin for him to make a good run before being forced out ne%r the corner From the resulting scrum Tai cleared to neutral! territory. North was negatived by a breach. Catlin intercepted and opened up. for South, but pass was forward. After a brief spall Clark was penalised inside his- twenty-five, and Taylor landed a good goal, making the scores North 11. South 6. With only a few minutes to time . the gapie became faster, and more open. In close play Burchell broke through a,nd passed to Stoupe, to Towers, to McLaren, who sent out a long pass to Sampson, but Taylor intercepted and with a powerful kick cleared to half-way. The South forwards followed up smartly and were within an ace of scoring when McLaren ran round and relieved with a kick to the side-line. The game ended in.n®utral territory without any further scores being added. Mr A. W, Dunstan (Waihi) was referee. PRIMARY SCHOOL MATCH. The curtain-raiser was provided by the Paeroa Primary Schools’ representatives versus. Thames Primary Schools. The game was a, really good exhibition of Rugby, and the combination and tackling of the local boys were particularly good. The tea,ms were fairly evenly matched, but the local lads had little difficulty in defeating the visitors by 19 points to O'. Tries were scored by N. Wilson (3), and A. Pivott (2), two of which were converted by L. Fisher. Mr F, Pivott wa.s referee.
