IDLE AND DISORDERLY.
HOBART TOWN JACK CHARGED.
ONE MONTH IN MT. EDEN GAOL.
The well-known figure ot John Gallagher, familiar as "Hobart-town Jack,” appeared at the local Police Court before Messrs H, J. Hare and G. P, Lamb, J’s.P,, yesterday morning charged with drunkenness in Nor*manby Roa.d on Monday night, There was also a second charge, that of being an idle and disorderly person within the meaning of the Police Offences Act in that he had insufficient means of support. On the charge of drunkenness a plea df guilty was entered, and Gallagher was convicted and dischargedOn the second charge a plea, of not guilty was entered. Constable McClinchy said that Gallagher had been hanging round Pae,roa since before the hotels openedHe was a very well-known identity in Ohinemuri and the Goldfields, especially in the early days. He had done no. work to speak of for a considerable time, and was now reduced to living on what little his friends cared to give him. Witness said that he had known Gallagher for over 25 years. When arrested on Monday night he was carrying a bottle of beer and was singing. He was 72 years df age, and had lived a hard life, and it was in his, own interests that he should be sent away front, Paeroa and cared for,. It was understood that he had some of his fajinily living in Auckland, and it seemed agreat pity that a man of his years should be knocking about dependent on the public ifor his keep. In reply to the Bench a long list’ of previous convictions was handed up.
The Bench agreed that it was not desirable that Gitllagher should remain in the town. A sentence of one month’s imprisonment at Mt. Eden was imposed.
