STREETS IN BOROUGH.

REPAIRS DURING JUNE.

REPORT OF WORKS COMMITTEE.

The Works Committee reported to the last meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council that a considerable' amount of work had been done in. Princes Street, including the laying of a 6in storm-water drain, and kerbin g and channelling the south side from .Wharf Street to Queen Street. The report continued :—

“Arrangements h,ave been made for fairly satisfactory patching metal from the Paeroa Quarry. The price now asked is 12s ex hopper. This is. a high figure, but as it is the best that can be; secured it has been agreed upon. Some chips have also been obtained from Tirohia a,t 12s f.o.r, This price also seems high, but the council now has great difficulty in obtainiing this class of material, and an effort is being made to secure some during the winter months, as it is impossible to finish new street construction without satisfactory blinding material. “It has been the policy of the council to replace existing wooden bridges with concrete pipes or culverts so that they will ultimately all be permanently laid. The worst wooden bridge is the one near Bennett Street on Thames Road, and it is recommended -that tills be replaced with a 3ft concrete pipes when th® drainage improvements have reached this point.

“It is a matter for regret that valuable plant, namely the roller and sprayer, is not under cove’r, and we .suggest that a shed for these machines be built on the section in Princes Street behind the office. “A communication has been received from the Prime Minister .accepting the offer of the council in connection with the 'formation and metalling of streets in the Railway Settlement. It is nplw desired by the department to form and metal Aorangi Road east of Ainslie Road as far as houses have already been erected. This means nearly nine chains more. The length of Ainslie Road is approximtaely 19 chains, of which about 13% chains are in the settlement. The; proposals include the whole length, and the estimated cost to the council is £2OO. We recommend that the arrangements, be approved and the work authorised; also that the Works Committee be allowed to arrange to put in hand the work authorised in Raroa Road. Uf this is done It will provide properly for the whole area.

“The matter of water lying iii the vicinity of the Commercial Hotel and near the Public Works office will be treat as urgent and attended to. Unfortunately, whenever we get such heavy rain, the water will always lie for a time in the vicinity of the Paeroa Hotfel, Station Road, Rye Lane, and Puke Road areas. On this occasion the water subsided considerably in a very short time, doubtless owing to the considerable improvement already effected in the main outifall drain. This will further improve as . the work is carried on. The Public Works Department should shortly reach Puke.. Road, when it is proposed to immediately put in hand the continuation wc»rk which has been authorised. “Complaints have been 'received in reference to the condition of the

street under the subway. This matter has received frequent attention

by the committee, and we are how assured by the district engineer that the work will be forthwith, and when this is done the continuation of the footpath will have immediate attention.” The report was adopted.

In regard to the street under the subway Or. P, E, Brenan said he was glad to learn that the work was to be undertaken at once. He considered that the Railway Department had quite failed to recognise the requirements of the residents in that locality. There had been no semblance of a. footpath for nearly two years, and it was high time something was done.
