The advantages of the State Dental Service as a career for girls was mentioned by Mr R. D. Elliott, inspecting officer of that department, at Ngatea on Wednesday. He pointed out that approved physically fit girls who had the ability and the willingness to study were accepted to. receive the two-year course of ti’ainnig in Wellington. During this period they received £75 per annum, and £4O allowance if their homes were not in Wellington, and on passing out received. an appointment, possibly near their holme town, >for a term of five years at the salary of £195, increasing to £225 per annum. The work was pleasant, the hours short, and there were plenty of holidays.

In presenting the report of the Health Committee at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council Ci. H. J. Hare said that an inspection had been made of the werfiow of the sewer at Junction Street, and he was pleased to state that the position was not quite so bird as had been reported by the residents in that locality. The, trouble had been occasioned by the storm-water backing up and retarding the flow iff the sewer to some extent.

The sweeping out of sheips in Victoria Street, Hamilton, after 8.30 o’clock each morning, when people are streaming ,to work, was the subject of comment by Cr. F. E, Snell at a meeting of the .Hamilton Council on Wednesday. Cr. Snell s.aid there were numerous complaints that leaving this work so late -each morning was, the source df annoyance to pedestrians and a danger to the health of these travelling the street at the time. It w.as pointed out that the by-la,w required main street premises to be swept out before 8.30 a.m,, and the council decided to enforce this, by-law and to prosecute where breaches are occasioned.

An appeal to parents- o;f children under school age to take advantage of the free dental treatment available at the Government dental clinic at Ngatea was made by an executive officer of the department when addressing a meeting at Ngatea on Wednesday. He asked the' Nga.tea School Committee to urge parents to call o.n the dental officer, discuss the matter, and, i‘f necess.ary, make an .appointment for treatment.

Despite the height of the flood bn the Plains during .the early part of the week on account of the abnormal tide topping the stop-bajiks, the water was practically gone from all parts ■yesterday.
