WHITE NEW ZEALAND.
EXCLUSION OF ASIATICS.
FRUITGROWERS’ PROPOSAL.
‘‘That the Government be urged to pass legislation that all/Asiatics, be debarred frqm coming iiito New Zealand for ten years,” was a remit submitted by the Canterbury Association at the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Conference at Wellington last week. Mr Freeman (Canterbury), in moving the remit, said that they should hold out for a White New Zealand. An alarming number of Asiatics were obtaining a footing in the Dominion, and before long it would be impossible for Europeans to earn a livelihood. “I notice,” he said, “that a shipload of Germans are coming to Australia a,nd "New Zealand. It is about time we took a firm stand on the matter. The next tiling we will have is a shipload of Russians.”
Mr W. A. Tate (Greytown) seconded the remit. “I do ; so,” he said, “because New Zealand is the best country in the world, and we should keep it clear for Europeans." /
Mr C. McKay (Nelson): This is one of the most ridiculous suggestions I have ever heard. What have we as fruitgrowers to do with such a ma.tter ? Surely we caAi trust the Government to safeguard us from Asiatics ? The number of Asiatics in the Dominion at- present is very small, and I don’t know what many towns in New Zealand would, do if they had not John Chinaman to bririg up the vegetables. There was .a conflict of opinion on the question, but the remit was carried. by a fair majority.
