. When opening the Hawei'a Show liifst week .the Hon. G. J. Anderson referred to .the need for the fullest possible development to enable the country to recover from the slump period. The only way to secure prosperity, lie said, was to live economically within out means. He referred to the expenditure of £8,000,000 on luxuries last year, and emphasised that tne only way in, which the country could overcome depression was; by the restriction of expenditure according to income.

Up to May, said the Minister, the dairy industry showed a, decline in production of butter-fat ofc 5.9 per cent. The decline had been on the butter manufacturing side of the industry. The decrease for toil months of the 1925-26 season was 11.2 per cent, on the basis of gradings 'for export. On the same basis, and for the same period, cheese showed an increase of 5.7 per cent. The quality of the butter and cheese this season had improved appreciably, compared with the preceding year. In .a, subsequent statement reviewing the production of produce expoit,ed for the year ended March 31, compared with the previous l year, was approximately £3,000,000. Of this sum, roughly, £1,000,000 was due to lower ' prices and £1,000,000 to the, increased stocks of butter and cheese held in store under dairy control.

Speaking of the frozen meat industry, he said that lambs showed an increased output, the killings of mutton were somewhat reduced, beef showed a kfrge shrinkage, and boneless beef and pork showed increases. The Continent of Europe was proving a useful outlet Tor the second grade and cow beef.
