At yesterday’s meeting, df the Hauraki Plains County’ Council instructions were given to have notices issued to landowners calling On them to clear noxious weeds. The Licensing Court ajt Melbourne • decided that 40 hotels in the licensing districts, c>f Albert Park, Port Melbourne, Prahran, St. Kilda, Wil- \ liamstown, Melbsurne, , East Melbourne, North Melbourne, Geelong, and Warrenhelp should be closed. The Court gave as its reasons Overcompetition in trade and illicit trading, necessitating too costly police supervision; ' . Under the existing law the maximum Amount which a magistrate can order Jor maintenance against a near relative is 21s per week. Under the terms of the Destitute Persons Amendment Bill, which was introduced in the House last week this amount is increased to 425. The measure further removes the limitation of the amount for which a maintenance order may be made. The liability df parents in respect to the cost of maintenance of> children in public eir charitable institutions is extended, and provision is made for a magistrate to impose a fine in addition to imprisonment for failure to comply ' with the Court’s order.; An English, tourist while “doing” the Waikato recently was surprised and disgusted to notice so many Maori women enjoying their pipes. On his return to Auckland he mentioned the matter to an old colonist, remarking that it was a sure sign of the degene-, racy of the Maori race when their women smoked, pipes. Said the New Z&aJander: “Well, if that is so, the Irish women pf the working class must have been degenerating for a good while, because I,remember seeing them smoking clays in Dublin when I was a boy.” The tourist said no more. There is nothing wrong ' with pipe smoking for man or woman sb long as the right tobaco is used. Choose a brand as free from nicotifle as you can. That’s all. Our New Zea-land-grown tobaccos contain only-a trifling percentage of nicotine, -and you can’t beat them for flavour and aroma. You can smoke them for hours, and they won’t do you any harm. Ask for Riverhead Gold, mild; Navy Cut (Bulldog), medium; or Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullhead), full sti ength.*
