THE QUEEN CARNIVAL.

THE BLUE QUEEN.

COMMITTEE’S DECISION

In view of the decision of the Queen Carnival Committee to Continue the proceedings after the data of termination made by th© Borough Council the following correspondence has been forwarded stating the decision of the Blue Queen’s Committee :—

“The following letter was put before the Paeroa Boy Scouts’ Committee by the secretary of the committee of the Blue Queen. We regret that out suggestion was not agreed to. In view of the decision of the Scout’s Committee to continue the carnival, we shall, of course, continue in the proper carnival spirit. We feel, however, that we must plage our views concerning the continuation of this carnival before the public and thus justify our action, and- therefore request that you kindly publish our letter referred to.

Following is the letter: — “I have been instructed by my committee to write to you in reference to the opinion expressed by the Paeroa Borough Council, namely, tha,t the carnival should be brought to a close by the 30th instant. I have to advise you that my committee is also of the opinion that the carnival should be bi ought to a ; n early conclusion. While we realise that the council possibly has no jurisdiction in fixing the date of closing we also foel that the council, being the elected representatives of the public of Paeroa, is expressing the view of the public, and that its opinion must .therefore receive the .very fullest consideration. “It must be remembered always that to be successful the Scout movement must have the support and sympathy of the public, and if at this juncture we antagonise public opinion by forcing on the public a continuation of this ca,rnival against the express wish of its representatives, it is obvious that the Scout movement in Paeroa must eventually suffer. Up to the present time the public has been generous in its support, but at the present time, with unemployment difficulties and financial troubles, it is not right to expect too much from the people of this town. “We understand that the scheme was originally launched with the object of raising some £25, and that the more ambitious object now before the public was later devolved. We feel that with the money now in hand, together with that which will come in before the actual closing of the carnival, will be amply sufficient to form a nucleus fund towards the present object, and that the scouts themselves, by means of entertainments, sports, etc., should by their own endeavours raise any further funds required a,t a later date. The money in hand will also be sufficient to liquidate all present liabilities. At any such future function organised by the scouts the members of my committee would always be willing to assist.

“It is therefore felt that the suggested closing date is too far ahead, and that to continue to that d'a.te would only end in the general public becoming ‘fed up/ to put it bluntly, with the carnival and the Scout movement, and this is just what we wish to avoid.

“My committee suggests, therefore, that the closing date he ma.de Saturday, July 3—the end of the week being suggested as a better date than June 30, which falls in the middle of the week. The Soldiers’ Club, or some other ha,ll, could be engaged for this night, at which the results could be announced. My committee, is not favourable to a bazaar organised on a big scale at which the public will again be asked to subscribe. “My committee is unanimously in favour of the opinions l expressed in this letter, and the Blue Queen is in full sympathy with her committee. We anticipate that our views will be reciprocated, and we haye therefore cancelled all our bookings after July 3 next.”
