ORPHANS’ CLUB.
LAST NIGHT’S SESSION.
AN ENJOYABLE EVENING SPENT.
The second session of the Paeroa Orphans’ Club’s 1926 session was held a.t the Soldiers’ Club last night. There was a large attendance of local orphans, as well as several visiting brethren from Hamilton and Auckland.
The president (Bro. P. Williams) opened the proceedings, and after the National Anthem had been sung Bro. E. Edwards was duly invested and invited to preside over the session. On taking his seat on the dais BroEdwards thanked the members for the honour that had been accorded him. On behalf of the club he extended a ■hearty welcome to the visitors, .and expressed the hope that they would all enjoy themselves.
With a huge fire 'roaring up the chimney, and in the haze of tobacco smoke, enjoyment and goodfellowship reigned supreme.
The following brethren contributed towards the harmony of the evening : Messrs S. Holdsworth (Auckland), A. Bartley (Devonport), R. Cooke (Hamilton), and Bros. G. S. Taiboys, R. B, Dunlop, R. Foster, W- Bottomley, and E. V. Slyfield. Considerable amusement was caused by the chairman calling on several members to deliver a two-minute speech on subjects named from the chair.
The following new members were elected-: Messrs A. M. Samuel, M.P., H. J. Hare, H. J. Thorp, J, L, Rowe, W, J, Moore, C. H. Pascoe, J. Thomas, J. Barrett, W. Collier, D. Sheehan, E. A, Chester, J, H, Morland, L. W. Wright, G. P. de Castro. The idea of holding a “hard-up” night next session was abandoned, as a unanimous vote on the proposal was not forthcoming.
