TURUA TOWN BOARD.

oMONTHLY MEETING. ROUTINE OF BUSINESS. The regulai’ meeting of the Turua Town Board 'va.s held on Wednesday evening, Mr J. Mules presiding over Messrs C. Scott, S. G. Williams, J. McConnell, J. H Johnston, J T. Davies, F. Olsen, and the clerk, Mr J'. Ejreen. OFFER OF METAL. The N.Z. Roads, Ltd., wrote offering Lo sell the board the 160 cubic yards af metal left on the concrete road at the completion of their contract. The price asked was 16s per cubic yard. It was agreed to purchase the me-taj. ROADING CONTRACT. The N.Z. Roads Company wrote seeking a clearance from its roading contracts. Mr Mules said that the county engineer and councillors had recommended that the reouest be granted. The contractors had treated the board very well. Messrs. Olsen and Williams complained of the lack off surface on, the roads. Mr Green pointed out that the ap>parent failure was due to. the use. of large metal, in the top coarse. Whei e the smaller size metal was used the surface appeared better. Mr Olsen argued that a sufficient top coa.ting of bitumen had not been given. Mr Williamsm also pointed out that tile compa.ny had not patched the roads as promised. It was agreed that the company be given a clearance, for the Orongo* Road contract, h.s agreed at a recent conference and for the contract for the recoating of ten chains of. Ha,uraki Road. For the Piako Road it had been agreed at the. conference that the company should do certain patching. Members agreed that very little patching had been done, and it was decided that an inspection be. made by all. members of the boa,rd for the purpose of enumerating the demands. In the discussion that followed it was pointed out that instead of making a 14ft road an 18ft road had been

m.ade in error, BACK STREET WORK. The N.Z. Roads Limited wrote on May 10, ’Acknowledging receipt of the notification that its tender of £l3OO for carrying out the works in Raratuna Street, Oparia Roiad, and Awa Street, had not been accepted, and that the was .prepared to offer the sum of £1225 for the work. In reply the company advised that its bedrock price w.as £l3OO, and that if this was not accepted the plant would be removed. —Received. There, was considerable discussion and explanation of the amount of money Available from the County Council for this work. The work will be done with county machinery probably next season if the plant is available, ant! supplies of metal can be secured. VALUATION. The. clerk reported ’ that as the result of the recent revaluation of land for rating purposes, the board would have from seven to eight thousand pounds more to rate ‘Upon. The average revaluation of town sections had increased from £l2 to £3O to £4O, but many valuations had ben reduced. It could not be definitely stated what the increase was, a.s some objections had been entered, and these had not yet been dealt with bj' the Assessment Court. The matter affected the board in that it was necesary to give notice of intention to strike, rates. It was agreed that the matter be deferred till, the next meeting, and that in the meantime the estimates would be prepared by the works committee. Discussing the work necessary during the coming year it was mentioned that the patching of Waihou Street, Raratuna Street, from Griffith’s Conner to the School and. Oparia Roads from Elvin’s to Clotworthy’s were urgent. The renewal of the culvert at the corner of Piako and Hauraki Roads was very urgent. APPROACH TO WHARF. On the motion of the chairman the clerk was instructed to ask the Harbour Board to ha.ve the approach to the wharf repaired where it had been washed away.
