PAEROA DEFEATS NGATEA. SATURDAY AFTERNOON’S GAME. Probably one of the best hockey matches seen in Paeroa for many years was the. game played on Saturday afternoon between the Paeroa, and Ngatea todies’ teams. Both teams worked with a will, and, individually, there was some sparkling play at times. The visiting forwards played with skill, and combination, but there were weaknesses in the back division. In the Fa<eroa team the position was somewhat reversed. The forwards were, slow <\t following up, and at times failed to keep their correct places. In the back division, especially when on the defensive, there was plenty of combination, particularly in the half line, and the fielding generally was .sound. The following were .the teams: —

Ngatea.—Miss P. Hayward, Mrs ’BerteJ.sen, Misses L. Birkenhead, T. McKerchar, M. Miller, J. McKerchaf, D. Wade, E. Wheeler, M. Quintal, GQuintal, H. Costello*. Paeroa.—Misses P. Treanor, N. Finnic, H. Shand, G. Finnic, V. Shand, F. Shaw, B. Bunting, L. McKee, F. Caseby, A. Morland, C, SWann. Towards the close of the first half a tight scra.mble in Ngatea’s circle ended in Miss Morland netting the first goal. After the bully-off Miss Miller carried up and sent out to Miss Wheeler, to Miss M. Quintal, who carried on and shot a good goal. In the second half Misses V. Shand and Caseby added another goal eaph for the home team. The visiters carried into the circle on several occa.sions, but the. home-backs cleared to neutral ground.- The game ended Paeroa 3, Ngatea 1. A few notes were taken concerning the play of some of the members of the Paeroa team, a,nd probably the constructive criticism will do no harm. Miss Swann requires to follow up more, and when oportunity offers to centre, to hit harder. Miss Morland is slow at getting rid of the ba,ll, and seems- inclined to wait instead of following her hit through. Miss Caseby, although a new player, gave a good all-round exhibition, and 'gained many advantages with 'tire bully. The hallf line and backs, both individually and collectively, played well, were fast, and hit the ball with judgment. Miss V. Shand is a towel" of strength to her side, and undoubtedly the mainstay of the team. Saturday’s team, with practice, should be able to give a good account of itself during .the season. WAITAKARURU V. THAMES. A competition game. The Waitakaruru ladies’ hockey team defeated .the Hauraki club’s, team from Thames at Waitaka.ruru on Thursday last by three goals to nil. The match was the of the competition for the Laprajk shield. The field was wet and slippery, and the play was not brilliant, though the the game was evenly contested til the latter stages when the visitors weakened. The combination ot both teams was weak. The Waitakaruru team failed to make the most of its advantages when the play w.as in the circle, and there was a tendency among the backs to play off-side. Miss T. Preston who scored two tries and Miss M. Beaver, who scored one. try, played outstanding games. Mr Gillespie of Ngatea was referee. The teams were as follows :— Hauraki. —W. Boyle, W. Smith, E. Hauragan, V. Cameron, G. Billing, S. Miller, J. Law, M. Ladner, F. Gordon, C. Dorwall, J. Willets. Waitakaruru. —M. Parfitt, P.' Harris, Mrs Barlow, M. Faherty, E. Donaghy, M. Harris, E. Stretton, M. Beaver, M. Beaver, F. Be.rney, T. Preston.

KEREPEEHI CLUB. Although the members of the Kerepeehi club a.re still waiting for their sticks they are not wasting time. A series of blackboard lectures on the game have been arranged. The club has selected brown and gold a.s itls colours. A ball is, to be held shortly to arise funds for the purchase of sticks, etc., and Mrs W. Kidd and Miss 'M. Thompson have been appointed joint, social secretaries.
