ACCIDENT AT KOPU.
LEVEL-CROSSING SMASH. DRIVER’S FORTUNATE ESCAPE. A level-crossing smash, luckily without very serious consequences, occurred at Kopu on Saturday afteinoon. Mr L. Manktelow, of Ngatea, was driving his Ford truck to catch tlie ferry, and failed to notice the approaching train from Thames until the engine was right on the cattlestop. Involuntarily he applied the brakes, and then, realising that he had stopped right o.n tlie lime, moved his truck forward, but the slight delay proved disastrous, and the engine struck the truck in the. middle, hurling it into the a,ir. The truck landed in a drain twenty feet along the road and facing the direction from which it had come, and was considerably damaged. The driver was merely shaken and bruised.
