HAURAKI DRAINAGE.

MONTHLY BOARD MEETING. The Hauraki Drainage Board held its monthly meeting at Turua on Friday, Mr G. Gray presiding over Messrs J. Mules, R. Baker, R. Heappey, D. G. McMillan, and the clerk (Mr J. E. Green). Several instances of drains having been seriously damaged by cattle were mentioned, and a, tightening up of the fencing regulations was advocated.

It appeared that since the; board cbfmmenced supplying wire as its proportion of the boundary fence some settlers had removed the fences that, had bet;n in existence, tor ma.ny years, in the hope of getting supplies of hew wire. The difficulty confronting the board ,was to prove .that th© drain had previously bean fenced, as it, was not until a blockage occurred that the position was investigated, and in the meantime the land might, have changed hands. Further discussion on the subject provoked the, suggestion that the board should take over the whole of the; fencing, erection, and maintenance. It would mean increased rates for a time, but eventually lower maintenance costs. The clerk was instructed to procure a, further quantity, of wire and to serve the usual notices on several landowners. Mr E. A. Clark waited upon the board in regard to the notice served on him to 'fence an outlet through his property. He stated that the fence: had been erected with yvlre provided by the boa;rd, but. through some misunderstanding twice the quantity of wire allocated had been supplied. He was reluctant to pay for the additional wire, as the original fence had been covered up by sped! when the drain was improved. It was agreed that Mr Clark should pay the board for half the quantity o'f wire in dispute. GRADING OF ROADS. Mr Gray reported that the County Council had not yet had the bank left along the roadside drain on the Tu-rua-Orbngo road when spoil was graded up to the metal, removed as requested. It wa r s decided to again write to the council on the subject.
