BOROUGH WORKS.

REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE. COMMITTEE’S PROGRESS REPORT, The following report was submitted by the Works Committee at a meeting of the locaj Borough Council on Thursday night:— “Owing to the ' pressure of other work and the moving of the office it. has not been possible to arrange the visit of inspectionthis month, but it is, now suggested that it should be held immediately after the opening of the new post . “During the past month a few drains have been cleaned put, and the regular maintenance work has'been attended to.

“The staff has chiefly concentrated on kerbing and channelling, and footpath and ropd formation in Nomanby Road, which work is now well in hand. As metal supplies are assured, it is hoped to complete the Normahby Road portion at an early date. The work is making a very great improvement in the appearance the main street, and when completed will be in keeping , with the fine new post office apd the Borough Chambers. “The open drain in Princes Street between Wharf Street and Queen Street is being piped with Bin pipes as part of the improvement scheme, and part has already been done and the drain filled in.

“A certain amount of patching has been done in Puke Road, but in common with all our main streets a good de'aj, more is yet required. “An effort is being made to obtain suitable patching material, and We ask for authority to obtain 300 yards for the most urgent places. “The only portions of our main streets which appear to be standing the strain of the present traffic are those of Puke Road! which were sealed with bitumen and the racecourse; hill, on Thames Road, which was sealed with tar. experiments indicate that it is sound economy to seal streets when a good surface has been obtained.. "Sufficient metal is; now on hand for the metalling of lower Hill Street’, and it is proposed to proceed with this work at an early date if the wea, ther is suitable. » “The Public Works Department has commenced operations" on the main outfall drain, where about twelve men are now engaged.”
