INTEREST IN PUBLIC AFFAIRS.

(To the Editor.} Sir, —It is surprising .the lack of interest taken in our town in matters of public importance, as, evidenced' last Saturday evening, when only a few interested souls attended, a meeting in the Soldiers’ Club, where the chairman of the Thames Valley Power Board, Mr Claxton, explained the financial position and other matters affecting the board and ,the community as a whole in its; operations distributing electricity throughout its area. The meeting was arranged in connection with .the loan proposal to be decided next Wednesday at a poll to be taken over the Power Board’s area,. The amount involved in the proposal is £1'501,000. To my mind it, is positively amazing that the issue of such a huge sum as above-mentioned should receive such summary attention at the hands of the public in Paeroa. It would seem, on the face of the email attendance that gathered to hear Mr Claxton, .that such a trifling matter as the borrowing of £150,000' is but a mere passing event, of no particular importance. It is, a thousand pities, that the people do not realise the great importance of hydro-elelctricity and its, beneficial effects to the general community. W. H. TAYLOR. Hill Street, Paeroa. WANDERING CATTLE. Sir,—-It is time that some steps were taken to deal with the wandering cattle nuisance. I refer particularly .to Thames Road where Aorangi and Station roads join it. Every night there are cattle and horess wandering on the road, and on several 1 occasions motorists have narrowly avoided accident.: The cattle would appear to be habitually allowed out to graze, and apart from danger to motorists) it certainly does not improve the footpaths to have cattle using them as, a stamping ground. IS THERE A' RANGER ?
