KOMATA DRAINAGE.

MAIN OUTFALL IN BAD STATE. Work of cleaning authorised The matter of drainage in the Komata. area was referred to by the engineer (Mr E.’Shaw) at Thursday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council. The engineer stated that, in cojnpany with the riding members, he had made a, thorough inspection of ’the main outfall drain between Thames Road and the railway line. The drain was!'for the purpose of collecting the storm-water and draining the swamp between the red cutting and Kurere Creek. Generally, the drain was in a bad state. He pointed out that nothing had been done to the drain by the council since 1911, and in its present condition it was useless for the purpose of carrying off storm-water, and required deepening. Considerable damage had been done by cattle breaking down the sides. Should the council decide to grant a s.um towards the cost of the work he would recommend that the Bettes concerned should give a guarantee that they .would fence both sides of the drain on completion of the work, otherwise the cleaning would be practically useless. Or. R. R. Morrison reported that an inspection had been made of the drajn, and it was found that cleaning was urgently required. It was the main drain outlet from the countyroad in the vicinity of the long swamp. He was, of, the. opinion that relief should be given the ratepayers affected by the blocking of the drain. Cr. A. R. Robinson endorsed the romaskis of the previous speaker, and said that he understood the settlers in the a ; rea had raised a sum of about £4O towards the cost of cleaning the drain. He. moved that the council undertake to clean the drain, provided the settlers were prepaired to hand the sum of £4O to the council, and that an undertaking wias given that they would'fence the drain on both sides. Seconded by Cr. Morrison and carried. -
