HEAVY TRAFFIC.

WINTER CARTAGE OF TIMBER. PERMISSION OF COUNCIL SOUGHT. At the last meeting of .the Ohinemuri County Council Mr J- H. Evans, sawmiller, Paeroa, waited on the council and sought permission to cart heavy timber over certain county roads between the. dates Of May and September. In support of the request Mr Evans said he was aware that the county by-laws prohibited heavy carting during the months of May. and September, but he was in a quandary. He had bought and paid' for sqme 40 logs at the Rotokohu Gorge, and it would entail considerable loss and inconvenience if he could not get them to the mill at Paeroa before September next. IE permission could be given to cart the logs a two-wheeled honse waggon could be used if the council insisted. In his opinion a sixwheeled motor lorry and trailer would not. damage the road as much as a horse.-drawn waggon, and much time could be saved. He would be prepared to make, good any damage done to the road by carting. The engineer said that permi&ion had been given Mr Evans to cart bn another road during last winter, and the road had been left in good; order. Cr. H. M. Corbett pointed .out- that there was a duty to. ratepayers to be performed, and in view of the by-laws he did not think that, heavy carting (Should be allowed. .

The chairman i(Cr. W. F,. Johnstone) said the council did not want to hamper the industry, but, unfortunately,,. the road in, question was, df a peat foundation in parts and it would not stand up to heavy carting during the winter. Finally it was’agreed that permission be granted under the strict supervision of the engineer, .and .that the type of vehicle used and the weather wore to be the governing factors of the authority to cart. Mr Evans thanked the council for the consideration shown him, and said that he was quite willing to .abide "by the instructions df the engineer, and was. prepared to makt good any damage that might occur. Permission was al®b given to cart on .the Maratoto .and Hikutaiai roads under similar strict conditions. '
