ELECTION CAMPAIGN.

WAITAKARURU RIDING. CR. HARRIS UNOPPOSED. Ratepayers of the Waitakaruru riding, Hauraki Plains County, assembled at the Public Hall on Wednesday 5 evening to' adjudicates as to who should represent them on the County Council during the next term. Nominations have been received from Mr C; W- Harris, the sitting member, and from Mr J. D. Fagan, and the purpose of the meeting was. to hear an account of the steward-/ ship of Cr. Harris. If this, was considered to be (satisfactory Mr Fagan had agreed to stand down, so tha,t an election would not be necessary. At the.. request of both ' parties. Mr E. Walton, of. Ngatea, presided. The attendance approximated 70, the meetingbeing one of. the largest ever held in the district. Cr. Harris gave an eloquent address on what the council had done or had endeavoured to do, a,nd each statement was wildly applauded. ' At question ' time numerous questions were aisked concerning, the metalling of Miranda. Road, there evidently. being some opposition to the candidate from that quarter. These were answered to the satisfaction of the meeting, and a vote ofc thajiks tb Cr. Harris for his, address and past services- was moved 'by Mr. C. Hayward and seconded by. Mr W- Stretton. An amendment by Messqst Al Otter and G. French -to .the effect that the ra'e.payers had confidence in Or. Harris was carried without dissent. A vote of thanks to Mr Walton for presiding was 'carried, and' the meeting was closed a.s Mr Fagan did not desire to. address the .ratepayers Before the people left the hall Mr Faga : n informed Mr. Harris that he would stand down in his favour. Mr Harris announced this, and publicly thanked' Mr Fagan, the announcement being received with enthusiasm and prolonged applause. .
