NEW POST OFFICE.
OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONYINVITATION TO COUNTY COUNCIL. At yesterday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council the official ceremony in connection with the opening of the neiy post office at Paeroa was referred to by the receipt of the following letter from, the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall;) “We are of opinion that the occasion should be fittingly observed, and that it is desirable for the district to tender a banquet in honour of the Prime Minister’s visit. I have to agk if your council would care to join in this function, and thus add dignity and importance to the reception. In the event df your kind and favourable consideration I would suggest that the expenses be defrayed on a basis, of one-third county council'and two-thirds borough council, and I would esteem it a favour if you would appoint someone to co-operate and assist in making the arrangements. Advantage could be taken of the visit to arrange deputations if desired.’’ Or. Hi M. Corbett said that he thought the project was: entirely a borough matter, and although thb building well-warranted a fitting ceremony, he did not think .the county should be expected to contribute.
Cr. F. C. Hubbard siaid it wajs very desirable that the council should be represented, but he thought to be levied with the cost wa.s a little too much. Cr. A'. D. McGuire said that the County Council would l be availing itself of the visit of the Prime Minister to wait on him with deputations, and he thought it was desirable that the council should participate in the ceremony and pay. its share.
' Crs. Maice and Robinson agreed. The latter said that he felt content to leave the matter in the hands, of the chairman. The money would have to come out of unauthorised expenditure. . ' ' i
Cr. H. M. Corbett said .that, he was “prepared to climb down,” and he would agree to contributing "something sufficient to permit the councillors to attend if they wished,”' but he thought it a/ pity that the charge should, not come out of the Paeroa riding funds, as that riding would no doubt receive the. greatest benefit. Finally it was, agreed to leave the matter in the hands of the chainman and clerk, with power 'to act.
