KAIHERE POST OFFICE SITE.

(.To the Editor.} Sir,—A little more information to those of your readers who already know something of, .the details, of the Kaihere post office site comedy may .be of interest. Whilst the controversy over the s.ite; was at it highest one section of the, people there, so 1 understand, developed ,a Fa ( the|r mysterious malady, which 'reached almost epidemic form. It. was in the form of a kind of spasm of either rel- - or gratitude for what they had not done, or what they ought, to. do. for the soldiers, who lives opposite the Government site. The symptoms were hysteria, with violent waving of arms and total irresponsibility of. tongue action. It seems that one section the .level-headed class of people—went straight out for the Government site on the only one, good, sound reason, the greatest convenience to the greatest number. The other sentimental section, ably led by the local parson, decided that’ although the Government site was the best, ,the health of the, soldier in question had to be considered, and that the erection bf such a busy iniatitution as, a post.office opposite his front door might result in the hustle and bustle being very injurious to his health. Well, really, at first glance tin’s seems quite splendid, and very commendable., but the irony of the. sad affair is that most soldiers become addicted to hustle: it became the salt of their lives, so it now seems a ease of being killed by kindness, or it is necessary to be kind itb be cruel. This soldier is frankly puzzled and amused aften ten years’ total .absence of this gratitude stunt to find it overwhelming him all; bf a sudden. What’s the big idea ? LEAD-SWINGER.
