PAEROA BUILDING BY-LAWS.
CTo the Editor.! Sir, —The diversity of opinion, evidenced in your report of .the meeting of the Borough Council, is hardly to be wondered at when one realises the stupidity of some of these regulations. Seemingly no provision is made for tempoiary structures, although comprised of fire-proof, materials. A permit for these structures- might Nae issued for a, definite period in order to accommodate and permit a trial run oi business. But no deviation is p rmlissible by these Medes and Persians, because, forsooth, somebody else might’ want? to start a business, and Paeroa. does not want business. The sanitary conditions of premises certainly require the strictest supervision, but the building itself must be viewed from a different viewpoint—i.e., the financial point. As matters; are at present, there is a tendency to conserve the tiade monopolies now existing and to penalise any new venture by nonsensical, brick areas a,nd pitoihibition <# timber not sold by local mills. With regard to kahikatea, which lis, barred,' it is common knowledge that much of this timber is superior in many 'respects to saj' iO.B. ri.mu or. kauri or mat'ai, the latter two taking or becoming infested with the borer grub more frequently than does good kahikatea, which ip allowable in other districts. It will be a drawback to Paeroa if a, few men "dressed in a little brief authority” cannot use their common sense in the administration of these building’by-laws and encourage instead of hamper the starting of new industries and businesses in the town. Nobody asks for a. “go as you please” policy, but so long a building is sanitary and fire-proof why hinder its erection ? What is the object in sp doing ? BUILDER.
