PAEROA BOROUGH.

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. ROUTINE BUSINESS. The- monthly meeting of the PaerWBorough Council was held on Thursday night, His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall.) presiding over the following: Crs. P. E. Branan, E, Edwards, J. W. Silcock, H J. Ha,re, G. P. de Castro, E. A. Pwritt,-J. Pinder, and the town clerk (Mr W. C. Alexander)SEWERAGE CONNECTIONS. Mr Ru I. Roberts, in response to instructions to connect a property in Flora. Street with the sewerage system, advised .that the property was under - offer, and until the sale was effected permission for an extension of time to connect up was sought. An extension of one mbnth was granted. Mr R. J. Bramley wrote advising tha.t his buildings in Nahum Street were .to be- removed at an early da,te and 'requesting further time. —Deferred until next month. The N. Z. Co-operative Dairy Co. advised .that, the five houses belonging to the company near the butter factory would be connected to the; system as soon as details; of the work required were completed. . STORM-WATER DRAIN. Mr T. Rolfon,Trussell Street, wrote drawing attention to tihe state of the; drain at the lower end of his property and 'requesting that it be cleared of rubbish and blackberry. The Mayor -explained the position, and said that it 'was only a stormwater drain and a natural drain. The. matter was deferred pending an inspection by the council during its tour of borough works. REMISSION OF RATES'. Tire district Public Trustee wrote polnt|ng out that the property of the late Mr J. had been unoccupied for at least-six. months and requesting that a rebate of rates might be ma.de. . It was, resolved tha.t the applicant be informed that '.the rating was based on the unimproved value; and the question of occupancy under section 69 of the. Rating Act did. not apply. - WATER CHARGES. The. Education Board, Auckland, advised that- from April 1, the board would'not, pay any charges in connection with the supply of wafer to school teachers;’ residences. The board suggested that the- charges should be levied against the head teacher or tenant. . ARREARS OF RATES. The Commissioner of Crown Lajnds,! •Auckland, wrote requesting the council to withhold, the action of cutting off tile water supply to the house off the water supply to a house in .Coronation Street, until the payment of arrears of water rates could be • considered by the" Land Board. It was decided that in view of there being a ; likelihood of the Land Board paying the rates the water

would not be cut off in the. meantime. Mr- L, E. Shaw wrote in reference to receiving a, demand for water rates and advised that his.pi-operty was situated within the Ohinemuri County, to which he had paid his rates'. —Referred to the town clerk for action; .T. C. Bayliss, Waiuku; wrote with reference to the rates due by him to the borough, and objected to a; sum of £3 6s 5d which had been added to the account as arrears. • The town clerk Was, instructed to reply that the council,had no power to remit rates,, apd! to point out the clause on the rate demand showing the period for which the rates were charged. BAND ROTUNDA. The Paeroa, Chamber of Commerce forwarded .the following resolution : “That this chamber is .of opinion that the band rotunda should now be re-, moved from , its present position, as it interferes with .the -.ppioa.ches to, and detracts from .the view and appearance of, the new post office.” The matter was deferred for fidthe.r consideration. . NON-CONSUMERS’ RATE. Mr A. M. Samuel;, M.P., wrote, acknowledging receipt of a. resolution concerning the non-cbnsumers’ :ate and stating:. “Although in entire agreement with the purport df the resolution, before committing myself to any definite action in the matter I would like to know what has been, done by my predecessor concerning the subject in the last Parliament- I will then, be in a better position .to know how to proceed.” . ’ The Mayor sajd that he had recent'.ly interviewed the membe.r, who. had given an assurance that he would do what he could when .the opportunity arose. MOTOR-BUS LICENSES. C. H. Wright, Puriri, and H. Holtby, Hamilton, wrote asking for a refund of the amount overpaid for heavy traffic licenses during the currency of the recent race meeting at Paeroa. • The matter was referred to the finance committee with power to act. The applicants were to be informed : that a test case wais pending, and bn receipt df the decision, a further reply would be forwarded. POST .OFFICE TRIANGLE. The district engineer, Public Works Department, wrote in connection with the vesting of the apex of the' tiiangle at the. new post office in the corporation for' street purposes and advised that before that could be done it would be-necessary for a proper survey to be ma.de and a certified plan prepared as to the faking of land for road purposes; It was proposed to vest the small area in the Borough Council free of charge,. The cost of the survey.would have, to be borne by the council. It was desired to know if the council was agreeable to bearing the cost of the survey and preparation ui plans.The Mayor said he understood that the cost to the council would be about £6.
