CRITERION BRIDGE.

ALLOCATION OF COST.

AGREEMENT BY LOCAL BODIES. At Wednesday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council a letter was received acknowledging the council’s confirmation of the arrangements ■made in connection with the allocation of the cost of the Criterion Bridge, the allocation to the Paeroa Borough Council being £1650 and

the Ohinemuri County Council £1350, total, £3OOO.

In the concluding portion of the. letter it was Stated by the Mayor (Mt W. Marshall) : “I have had a personal interview with Mr Baker, inspecting engineer, Mr Campbell, district engineer, and Mr Thornton, resident engineer, and-I have pleasure in advising you that they gave every reason for us to hope that your request concerning financial would be fayourably considered by .their head office. They also promised to expedite the work, as it wlas admitted to be one of considerable urgency. AVill you kindly convey to your chairman and council my expression of satisfaction and pleasure that a complete agreement has been reached. 1 a.m confident that -the co-operation was to the mutual benefit of our ratepayers, and .the results appear to me to be satisfactory.”

■ The chairman (Mr W. F. Johnstone) fsaid-it was satisfactory to know that the matter had been finalised. The arrangements, made were preferable to waiting for a commission.

Cr. H. M. Corbett asked what steps were proposed to be taken to raise the money. The chairman replied that the department had been asked to approve of allowing the council to spread the payment over a period of two ye'a.rs. If this could be done it’would probably save striking a special rate to find the money.
