Jack Gallagher, better known as “Hobartown Jack,” was in Paeroa yesterday. He is the “real” Jack, and not the “sham,” as) Was considered by the wise heads in Auckland some time ago, when he was, supposed to have been drowned in the Auckland Harbour. “Jack” is upwards of 80 years of age, and is,: “without a care and is on the road to anywhere.” Yesterday in Paeroa wais- a rather “interesting” time for “Jack,” Nautlcally speaking, “Jack was ajahore.” He sailed along the street in a breezy way—one boot off and one boot on. He had brought a brand new pair, but poor Jack’s “corny” toes, were too much for his new purchase, so he discarded the boot that troubled him most. “Hobartown Jack” is well known on the Goldfields, haying been in the district, for over 60 years, so yesterday the “old timer” had many old friends with whom to exchange handshakes.

Thirty-odd Aucklanders will remember St. Patrick’s Day and the Paeroa races of ,1926. They were pas-' sengers in one of the big omnibuses which made ,the trip, and when near Ngatea on the return journey one of those mishaps, occurred of which every motorist of this district expects to hear of any day. A horse •grazing on the roadside jumped in front of the bus and was knocked down. Considerable damage was done to the radiator of the motor, and although repairs seemed hopeless an attempt was made to stop the, leak. Approaching midnight it was found that the radiator fcould not be repaired, and a telephone message was sent to Auckland for, another bus or another radiator, but, on its arrival, some hours later the radiator sent was also found to leak badly. The tinsmith Was again called, and about 6 a.m. the journey was resumed. The passengers state that the mishap was purely an accident, and although they blamed .the driver for not sending for a relief bus, earlier, they, soundly rated the County Council’s ranger for permitting horses to wander.
A busy scene presented itself at the’ Paeroa railway tsation early yesterday morning. From 5.30 to 6.30 a.m.. fifty racehorses were loaded from the station platform into horse-boxes, together with a considerable amount of equipment.
