CONCERT AT PAEROA.
ATHLETIC CLUB’S EFFORT.
ENJOYABLE ENTERTAINMENT.
That the people of Paeroa and district are not slow to. show theii appreciation of a musical treat when the opportunity offers was cleaily evidenced on Tuesday night, when the Paeroa Athletic Club held a concert a't the Gaiety Theatre, as a means of raising funds, for the promotion of a ■local, sports meeting. The efforts, of the club were liberally supported, and a substantial credit balance will result. No pains' were spared to provide an attractive programme, and the best of the district’s talent was heard to advantage. The enjoyment and appreciation of the large audience caji be gauged by the fact that each performer was recalled at least once, and some twice.
The stage was tastefully decorated with Empire flagis and greenery, and the floira.l decorations, which were much admired, were carried out by Miss Rickard. As ‘invariably Occurs in functions of thisTkind, thei bulk of the work falls on the secretary. In this capacity Mr Ken. Slyfield is to be congratulated on his organising ability and the' thoroughness with which he carried out the arrangements, which were complete to' the smallest detail. ?
The general, opinion was expressed that the concert was one of the most enjoyable that has been heard' in Paeroa for., many years. Included among those who assisted with items, in addition to the. loica! symphony Jazz Orchestra, were Mesdames' Lithgow, J. W. Jones, E. Johnson, P. Hague-Smith, Misses, J. de Castro, P. Pivott, M. Vercoc,. J. Buchanan, R. McCullay, and the Rev. A. M. Costain, Messrs J. Pickford, E. V. Slyfield, H. Beech, and J. H. Dickson. With such a diversified programme it would create an invidious distinction to attempt to criticise the a;rtistts', but a special word of commendation is due to Mrs Lithgow for her rendering of “April. Morn.” This singer was also heard to advantage in the duet “Rose of my Heart,” with Mrs Jones. The quartette comprisnng Mesdames Lithgow and Jones and the' Rev. Costain ajid Mr Wadsworth was particularly pleasing in “Regular Royal Queen,” a selection from “The Gondoliem,” and also in the encore number. , '
After the concert the club’s patron, Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., and the president, Mr Wr Marshall, together with the performers, were entertained ’by the club to, supper. Oh behalf of the Club the president expressed appreciation and thanks to the artists foir coming forward so willingly toi assist, and also paid tribute -to the liberal support accorded by .the public. Mr. Samuel a,lso added his quota of thanks, and said that although it had cost him a considerable effort to be present in Paeroa that evening he was imbued with the enthusiasm o£ the members and had thoroughly enjoyed the programme. He trusted that the club would'meet with every success in its endeavours to encourage athletics, in the district.
