PAEROA BOROUGH.

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. ROUTINE BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council was held last evening. His Worship the Mayor (Mr WMarshall) presided over .the followjng;—Crs. E. Edwards, P. El, Bretian, J. W. Silcock, H. J Hare, E. A. Porritt, J. Pinder, G. P. de Castro, and the town clerk (Mr W. C. Alexander). CRITERION BRIDGE. Replying to the council’s Ibtter advising that the Minister ’for • Public Works had approved of the joint contribution by the local bodies towiards the cost of the Criterion bridge bejng reduced to £3OOO, the Ohinemuri County Council forwarded the following resolution : — “That provided the Paeroa Borough Council’ is prepared to do so, this council will accept the Allocation of. £3OOO as the joint contribution from the local bodies towards, the cost of the Criterion bridge, and that, the Public .Works Department be asked to set up a. tribunal to allocate the cost between the two local bodies.” On the motion of Cr. Edwards, seconded. by Cr. Porritt, it was resolved to leave the matter tp the eub-com--mittee, with Ifull power to act. The Mayor agreed that it was the better course to pursue, in view of thq council being faced with a probable commission. UNCONTROLLED HORSES. A letter signed “One of your lawabiding citizens’’ was received, complaining of the manner in which aloca.T baker allowed - his - horses to Wander through the streets. The wiiter complained that in passing one. of the animals on a bicycle it had kicked out and caused his daughter to collide with a post and injure herself. -He asked that steps be taken to’ insist on horses being led through the main streets.

The Mayor said that the allowing of horses to proceed through the ' streets unattended was aji offence against the by-laws. The baker concerned had been communicated with, and he had given an undertaking that the offence would not be repeated. '

It was also resolved to advise a firm of grocers that it was also committing a breach, and advise that the warning be accepted. METALLING OF STREET. •

Mr J. P. IJindlay wrote drawing attention, to the promise that a portion of Victoria Street fronting sections 22 a.nd 23 would be metalled. He enclosed a cheque for £5 .towards the 'cost of the metal, and intimated that he had arranged to have the metal carted gratis. He would like the work done as soon as possible.

It was resolved to refer the matter to the foreman, with authority to sup- t ply the metal; as early as possible. •

NOXIOUS WEEDS. ,

’ Mr L. V. Lloyd wrote drawing attention to the growth of noxious weeds on the municipal reserve adjoining his residence in Wood Street, and stating that a ; danger of fire was occasioned while the land remained in its present state. A request was also made for five additional pipes' to carry the storm-water through his section out into' Willoughby Street. The Mayor said tha.t there was reason' for the first complaint, and the foreman ’had been instructed to take steps to adequately protect the applicant’s residence. Referring to ,the second request, the Mayor said thfit the council would have to decline responsibility as it was a natural watercourse. There were a number df natural watercourses passing through Paeroa, ratepayers’ properties.

In reply to Cr- de Castro the Mayor said it would create a dangerous precedent to pipe the drain. If that particular job was done the' council would run the risk of being involved in a.n expenditure of thousands of pounds-. It was decided to decline the request. KENNEDY STREET PATH. Mrs F. R. Welsh wrote asking that the footpath leading to her residence, Kennedy Street, be metalled and made passable for pedestrian traffic.—Referred to the Works Committee. ROADSIDE WEEDS. The local, office, of the N.Z. Dairy Co. wrote requesting tha.t the blackberries on the roadside fronting the offiee.be cut back to make available more room for tumiingl motor-cars; The Mayor said that the railway officials, had been requested to have the matter attended to .as early as possible. WHARFAGE ON METAL. The Hauraki Plains County Council wrote expressing its appreciation to the Borough Council for the arrangement ma.de in connection with wharf- . age charges on red metal landed at the Ngahina wharf. . RUBBISH CONTAINERS. A Hamilton resident ’forwarded particulars of a street rubbish container, as used in America, and offered to install them free to the council provided he was given sole advertising rights-on the cabinet for a term of seven years. . The Mayor that the receptacle appeared to be a useful article. Cr. Silcock moved that the request be granted. Cr. Hare thought the council should' be careful. On the suggestion of ’Or. Edwards’ it was decided to add “subject to the containers being kept in repair and erected to the satisfaction of the works committee” to the resolution, which was carried. STORM-WATER DRAIN. Cr. Edwards drew attention to- the state of the storm-w'ater drain in Russell Street at its junction with Waihi Road. He stated that a sliphad occurred on the bank in Russell Street, and the debris had been carried down, blocking the drain and’ causing the storm-water to overflow on to the footpath, a quagmire resulting in wet weather. The matter was referred to the Works Committee.’
