LICENSING POLL.

RESULTS FOR OHINEMURI.

MR. W. J. TOWERS HEADS LIST. In common with other parts of the province the triennial, election of a licensing committee was hejd in Ohinemuri yesterday, and particular interest manifested in the election for the five members. . ,

So far as Paeroa is concerned the .public took a keen interest in the contest. From the opening of the polling booth until the evening there was a steady stream of electors. As is frequently 'the- case, the' .largest number of votes were recorded .between the hours, of 3 and 6 p.m., when the poll clerks, Messrs G. E. Allen, P. Jaspers, C. H.‘ Butcher, R. Hodson, and W. Smith, had a very busy time in the two booths. ■at the Soldiers’ Club, which was the principal, polling place in the electorate. In Paeroa approximately 800 votes were recorded, which number was .largely represented by women’s votes.. It is q significant fact that of the 22 candidates nominated for the five seats on .the com-' niittee three, local men should top the poll. Of the five members, fiamely, Messrs Towers, Brenan, Marshall, Walters, and 'Wallnutt,. it is interesting to note that} .two Mayors, two exMayors, and a chairman of a county council were elected. The decision of the electois'shows a recognition of the worthiness and appreciation of the public services rendered by the-e gentlemen in the past. Mr Towers, who wa,s placed at the hdad of the poll, holds the distinction of being Paeroa’s first Mayor. Mr Brenan followed in Mr Towers’ footsteps,, and Mr Marshall is at present serving a second term as. Mayor of the borough. Mr Wallnutt is Mayor of Wajhi, which position he has held for a number of-years, and. Mr Walters is the present chairman ot the Piako County Council,-, and has held that office for a number of yeays. The new committee is- thoroughly representative of the people, and also comprises members who hold opposite views on the licensing issue. The results were obtained by the “Gazette" Office and announced' by Mr'J. ,W. Silcock at the Gaiety Theatre last -night shortly after .nine o’clock, and credit is due to the returning officer, Mr P. H. Wylde,, and his staff for the efficient manner ,in which .the returns were'.made available. The confidence and satisfac-> tion of the large gathering a ( t the result cf the contest were clearly deijton-r strated, by the manner in which the successful candidates were - lustily cheered. , ■ ~ .

To the persistent calls of. “speech,” Mr Towers acknowledged ■■■■ the confidence the electors had placed in him, and thanked a,!! who had voted for him that'day.

Mr Marshall said that he was' glad to have the public opportunity of returning thanks to all, whtf>.had sworked for< and supported him. He stated that -it was very gratifying to have fought and won against “vested.interest,” together with. the fcact that lie had the appellation of “wowser.” tacked on to him. . In his new office he would continue to do his best, and, as in the past, would make a point of never betraying the public, confidence. On calling on Mr Brenan it was found that he was absent from the theatre.

Following a,re the details of the voting for the five successful candidates, together with the totals only df the 17 unsuccessful nominees. The results are subject to a recount.'
