LICENSING ELECTION.

WHAT A DAY WILL BRING FORTH.

WHO KNOWS?

To-morrow will be election day, and in a couple of hours after the closing pf the poll at 6 p.m. we shall know all. about it; that'is, who will be .the five candidates out of the twenty-two—shall we say good and true men—to act as a committee to represent the people of the Ohinemuri Licnsing District, .which has been, and will remain till tjie first day of July next, a no-license area. Thei electors have a good field to select from, and all that upon them iss to select wisely from the twenty-two offering their administration.

For 17 years, at each election the people have fought hard for restoration, and now that they have secured it the issue largely depends upon them to elect, that controlling power that is so essential. The' electors should bear in mind when exercising their votes' that the duties of a licensing committee. —'more especially in the case of Ohinemuri —are-numerous and responsible. The result of the recent election, which for years has been fought by strong prohibition, is> proof that the people prefer ,thc open sale of liquor to the hole-land-corner clandestine principle. When the licenses are restored there will be little or no liquor s9ld by unscrupulous vendors other than through legalised channels,. There will be no “sly grog” shops retailing vile, concoctions at fabulous prices. It te hoped .that when the hotels are opened such places will be worthy of their position and responsibility, and .a credit to those who grant the licenses and to the inhabitants generally. This desirable end can only be achieved by the impartial handling of the powers which are invested in the Licensing Committee.

Ohinemuri te the first of the nolicense arefis tp regain licenses, which were thought would never come back, and if wise and judicious measures are dealt out by the committee, which, the people are called upon to-morrow to select, there will be no reason to regret the ‘return of restoration. Every person oh the roll nas the.same power to vote as at the general election, and it is to be hoped that full advantage will be .taken of the opportunity extended to them, to select wisely. The polling place at,. Paeroa fe the Soldiers' Club, and the hours df polling are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The following are the names of the candidates :—
