OBITUARY.
MR. JOHN HUBBARD. A life of usefulness closed on Friday last with the passing of Mr John Hubbard, < which occurred at the residence of his brother—Mr P. R. Hubbard —on the o>ld farm, Komata North, which deceased knew so well. About two months ago Mr Hubbard was admitted into Thames Hospital, but quite recently returned to Paeroa and stayed with his brother. The late John Hubbard was born at Long Beach, Canterbury, fifty-six years ago, where he ‘received the greater portion of his education. He came .to Paeroa with his parents in the year 1896, his father settling on the land how occupied by his brother.' Prior to coming to Pa.eroa the late Mr Hubbard served a term with .an engjneering firm at Onehunga. That was his outstanding characteristic, and after spending a few years bn the farm established himself in business as an engineer in Paeroa; Probably no man ha» manifested keener and more intelligent interest in the district—-in a .quiet and unassuming manner —than John Hubbard. He had a remarkable grasp of everything pertaining! to engineering, and had undertaken and mastered many classes of work that would have disheartened most men. He was a precise and diligent man, sound in his business methods, but withal a firm favourite on account of his sterling integrity. He was a man whom one had to l know intimately to judge his worth. ’ Mr Hubbard was the promoter of the Thames Valley Dairying Company, inaugurated in 1900 and was the company’s first secretary. He took a keen interest in the Paeroa Volunteer Fire Brigade, and was for 1 many years, one of its members. He always displayed conspicuous interest in volunteer matters, and held the rank of captain for some years; and w.asi himself a “crack * rifle shot. He was also at one .time a favourite - footballer, and had been a Paeroa representative. The late John Hubbard will be much missed by a large circle of the community. Tfie deceased was a single man, ahd leaves two sisters (Mrs D. McArthur and Mrs J. A. Reid) and three brothers (Messrs. P. R. Hubbard, W. Hubbard, and F. C. Hubba.rd).
The funeral of the deceased took place yesterday afternoon, and was * attended by a large and representative gatheiing of citizens, including the Mayor (Mr /W. Marshall), and members of the Borough Council and Ohinemuri County Council. The pallbearens' were drawn from members of the Paeroa Volunteer Fire Brigade. The hearse was preceded by the local boy scout troop. The funeral at the graveside was impressively conducted by the Rev. F. B. Dobson.
