PIPIROA FERRY.

DISCUSSION BY COUNCILLORS.

NO-OPPOSITION TO THE PROJECT

An informal, discussion by Crs. J. C. Miller, F. J. Mayn, T. McLoughlin, S- W. Parfitt, and H. J. Hare, of the Hauraki Plains. County Council, on Pipiroa ferry matters took pla,ce after the special, meeting yesterday.

... Cr. Parfitt said that, the public had subscribed a considerable amount of money, and he was of opinion that the council should immediately proceed with the calling of tenders for the pontoons and approaches. . Or. Mayn . said that all .the councillors, could do at present was. .to assure Cr.“ Parfitt that the matter would rceeive their support at the next regular council meeting. . Cr. Hare asked the position in regard to the bridge. He was agreeable to the ferry, but would not like to see money expended if the bridge was, to be erected in a. short time.

Cr. Parfitt said that the public had subscribed £540, and thus the ferry could be established at little cost to the County Fund.

Cr. Hare asked whether the fares had been flxel.

, Cr. Parfitt said .that the fees would be similar to those in operation at the Wharepoa ferry. It had been suggested that the outside traffic be made to pay a greater rate by issuing single tickets for 2s for cars and 2a. 6d for return tickets. The ferry committee had certain powers, but he would like an assurance that if it went, a,head with the construction of the approaches its action would be approved by the council. In reply’to Cr. H,are the chairman said that the cost to the County Fund would be from £250 to £350.

Cr. Hare advocated using kauri timber for the pontoon instead of pine, as, had been suggested. He was agreeable to the proposition, and would congratulate the people of the district on their enterprise. Replying to a queption Cr. Parfitt said that the winches from the Netherton ferry could not be used, as they had been condemned by the inspector of machinery.
