MUNICIPAL CHAMBERS.
BUILDING NEARING COMPLETION.
CONVENIENT AND SOLID.
The erection of the new borough council chambers in. Normanby Read is now nearing completion. Most of the work on the exterior of the buildr ing is completed, and. the work inside is proceeding apace. The 12ft plaster walls are finished, and workmen are now busily engaged oi\ the joinery. Entrance to 'the building from the main street is gained by mounting a couple of wide steps and passing ■under ' an arched vestibule and ■through double doors, in a puiic space measuring lift by 9ft. On t e right is the assistant clerk’s rvom, on he vestibule side of which is a draw window and counter for the convenience of those having business to transact. On the left is a door leading into the council chamber. Passing through double glass doors the town clerk’g room, ■ 14ft by 13ft, reached, leading off the main passage. Entrance is, also, gained torithisiroom from the' assistant’s room. On the left of the passage the Mayor’s room, measuring 13ft by. 12ft, is situated Beyond again are two cloak rooms, wxU wash-basins and conveniences. Leading out—of the town clerk s room is» the Bft by 7ft strong-room. This room should provide adequate accommodation for records, plans, etc., for many years to come. Immediately above th strong-worn is a brick cupboard which will be used as a f storing old- records and lumber. - the rear of the building is a handy little shelter. . The council meeting room, which measures 22ft by 15ft 4in, is- a fine ■ room, and contains a fireplace, as also does the town clerk’s room. The buiding is well ventilated, principally by. large box-framed win--r.dows of Arctic glass. The doors and are all made of heart of nmu; with the exception of the two ou e doors, which are of heart tot ar a. In each room picture mouldings and chdir rails, will be provided, and aito plaster and batter ceilings- with cornicea. ' . The'whole structure is one of solidity and utility, and ratepayers, can congratulate themselves that they are receiving remarkably good value for the money. When completed the chambers will be a, decided acquisition, and would be a credit to a borough larger than Paeroa. The con- ■ tractors (Messrs. Robinson and Beag r ley) are hopeful of having the building completed in about sjx z weeks time.
