WHARFAGE ON METAL.
REQUEST FROM PLAINS COUNTY.
SUBSIDY AGREED UPON. z
At last night’s meeting of the Faeroe Borough Council the following letter was, received from the Hauraki. Plains County Council’s engineer ” “As you are doubtless aware, my council is undertaking large reading schemes in the Netherton-Awaiti district, and in carrying out these works it will be necessary to land considerable quantities}, of red metal at the Ngahina wharf, Paeroa. lam informed that tjhere is a charge of Is a ya.rd for wharfage on all such material landing over the wharf. Taking into consideration the vital importance of this scheme to your borough, I am emboldened to ask whether your council- could see its way tp make a, reduction in this- charge, or as an alternative, subsidise the work on.the ■main road to an ■ equivalent amount.”
The Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) said he thought that the request should receive sympathetic consideration from the council. He did not think any member would be- willing to see an overhead charge added to a neighbouring local body. The charge would have- to be made-, but the money could be subsidised by the work <> n the road.
Cl's. Flatt and Edwards agreed. . Or. Brenan thought that the proposition would not be fair to the local ratepayers,
Or. Flatt moved that the wharfage charge be made, and that the work on the roads be subsidised to the-amount ojj the wharfage collected.
Cr. Brenan said that the landing of the metal would be causing an inconvenience to other users; of the wharf. He .favoured the council .remitting only 50 per cent-, of the' wharfage charges.
Cr. silcock said that it was proposed to use the lower wharf near the, crane. He did not .think any serious handicap would be imposed on, other users, of .the wharlj. ! Cf. Brenan moved as a.n amendment “That in order to aspist the Hauraki Plains County Council, this council agrees to subsidise the wharfage on metal landed at Ngahina to the extent of 50 per cent-” Cf. Hare said it was proposed to ajso land metal at ’Netherton. - The •metal landed at. Paeroa was for- use. on t|he roads'leading direct to the borough. Cr. Flatt contended that it was desirable- to have the roads leading - to Paeroa put in order as soon ap possible. t
Cr. Silcock seconded the .amendment, which, on being put, was declared .lo&t.
. Cr. Brenan thereupon moved a further amendment ,to the effect tjiat the council agree to subsidise- to the extent of 75 per cent.: , . Seconded by Cri Silcock. ,
' This - amendment was alsq lost, the proposer and seconder being ‘the only supporters. ■ _ Cr. Edwards, seconded. the proposal that the Hauraki Plains County Council’s request be acceded to, and it was carried, Crs. Brenan and Silcock recording their votes against.
